Charging system-stupid newbie question

of those two small brown wires, one should run to that lamp through the ignition as Chris described, and the other should be attached to +12V permanently, it should never read anything but a positive voltage around 12V.

So ignition 'on', engine not running, you should have voltage on both small wires. Ignition 'off', you should still have voltage on the one that goes to the battery, and ignition 'on; engine running, should still see voltage on the one straight to the battery.

After you get this sorted out and the charging system working correctly, then set timing followed by carb adjustment.
