Changing the Oil on a 100-4

Hi no I think the K&N is good as they come.

Two thoughts here;

By any chance has the oil pan been taken off and resealed? reason I ask is the oil pump overflows through a small hole on the engine block which is located near the oil pump mounting location. If one was to get too much sealer on the gasket for the oil plan in this area and block that hole, you could expect high oil pressure.


Other thought is that is this is an old engine and could have dirt/material in the oil from years of use, a possible blokage of an oil way in the crank, at a journal or such could also casue high pressure.

Rule out the oil valve by removing the spring all together, put the nut back on and run the engine. If it drops, spring is the issue, if not look at these other options. Of course don;t run for any period of time other than to see if the pressure is effected.

On high oil pressure, I have a comment. Some years ago, when it was difficult to obtain spare parts for Austin-Healeys. I used to make my own gaskets. One time I made a new gasket for the sump (oil pan). When I started the motor after fitting the new gasket, the oil pressure went so high it ruptured the flex hose to the gauge!
What I had done when I made the gasket was to forget to cut the "vee" in the side near the oil pressure relief valve return gallery. If you look at the cross section of the engine in the shop manual you will see there are two galleries here. One is highlighted in green to show the path the oil follows from the valve. Outboard of that you will see another gallery (not highlighted) which looks to be blanked off by the rim of the oil pan. The gasket is shaped to allow oil to flow from this gallery.

Question: Am I correct is stating that your engine oil pressure was OK until you changed filter types and the K&N filter you now have installed is a # HP2009-??

OH If you still have that Purolator Filter laying around give me the part NO off of it too.---Keoke
 
Hi Guys - thanks for the replies. Keoke, yes the oil pressure wasn't an issue until the oil change.

The Purolater filter number was L20252

and the K&N filter is HP-2009

I hope it's not the gasket in the sump - sounds like a bit of a pain.

Dear Matt, Please proceed to your nearest K&N filter vendor and order a --Wait for it!! a K&N Filter type [" HP2005 : ] which cross references directly to a Purolator #L20252. My Unhurried, last ditch gasp at a solution to your problem is: Who's ever Filter adapter is on your engine is not compatible with a K&N HP2009. I can't :banana: until I hear the HLY sing Vrooom! KEOKE- :tired:
 
Hey Keoke - Ok sounds like a plan ... does this mean essentially another oil change? I can only assume I can't take off the filter without draining all of the oil.
 
At rest the oil sits in the pan or sump and the filter, you will probably lose the oil sitting in the filter when you take it out, but the oil in the sump is lower so won't flow out, you will probably need a quarrt or less to top it back up, no need to waste oil or money on a full oil change.
 
I use an HP-2009 on my 100. According to the K&N website the 2005 and 2009 are identical except that the
latter has an 11-14 psi setting on the relief valve versus 11-17 for the 2005. Either should fit his car--if there is a problem with one there will be a problem with the other.
 
I understand your logic here Michael. However, the HP2009 is not listed on the K&N web site as a cross referenced part for his L20252 Purolator . Consequently, since the cars oil pressure was OK with the purolator installed gotta give the HP2005 a try. OTOH. it just may be that this filter adapter's design is not compatible with any K&N Filter.--Keoke-?
 
IIRC the 2008 is the same as the 2009 except the 2008 doesn't have the anti-drainback valve. If that would make any difference. I'm using the 2008 for clearance with the brake booster. (I have less room than most since I'm using a sandwich plate for an oil cooler.)
 
I found L20252 Purolator on Amazon. I figure, since we're hoping it's an oil filter problem, I'll put on the same model that was already on there. I should get it in by the end of the week. I'll report back. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Ok. Got the L20252 Purolator in and swapped it out with the K&N .....

same problem :frown:
 
That's strange HUH!

Do you still have that old Purolator??

If so compare the new one to it since there are several models with that same part Number. But we may have to do some serious work!-Dang!
 
Yeah I did check before I put it on and it's looks the same to me.

Yeah I do not like the way it smells either. Unfortunately it may be that changing the oil dislodged some dirt in the engine which produced a blockage. I think the most likely place would be the Crank shaft.-Whew! Was the drained oil very very dirty??

No matter how I converted it, 8 1/8 quarts seems like too much oil. 12ÂĽ UK pints = 7.4 US quarts, 12ÂĽ US pints = 6.15 US quarts
