Changing the Oil on a 100-4

I noticed I have a Purolator oil filter head - it seems like I just don't replace that with a new one? Sorry for being such an idiot, but how do I change the oil in my Healey?

Matt,

If this is the original oil filter, you remove the bolt at the bottom and remove the filter element inside. Be careful to note the way the parts come apart.

You can find a breakdown in the Moss catalogue or on line at

https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=28850

If this an aftermarket replacement spin on you replace it like you would any late model car, sounds like that not the case but would suggest looking into a spin on adapter.

Hope this helps...

Michael.

It takes a LOT of oil, like 8 or 9 quarts if I recall correctly, at todays prices an investment in your motor, but worth it.

The cartridge type filter is a little tricky to get back on right, make sure the metal cannister is seated correctly before you tighten in back down or you will get the dreaded pool of oil below the car on start up.

Wow great info. Thanks guys. Is there anything else I should do when I change the oil? I assume there must be something to grease.

Valvoline VR1 (look for the ZDDP sticker) is also a good choice and should be available locally, also there are other specialty oils like Brad Penn that have the ZDDP you need, not as big an issue if the engine is not recently rebuilt.

Hi, it is a requirement That an oil with ZDDP be used in these flat tappet engines. However, with an eye to economy if your engine is well broken in and you do not flog it hard, Castro's GTX 20/50 can also be used. Similarly, any racing oil such as Valvoline VR1 is also usable. Other high quality motor oils can be fortified with STP to improve their ZDDP content.--Fwiw--Keoke

I would suggest Matt, that you disconnect the battery first. The heavy cable connecting the starter to the solenoid is the battery lead, be very careful working that close to it.

The best procedure for working with the original, canister-type oil filters is to disconnect the filter AND head at the block, and perform the cartridge change on the bench. This way, it's easier to get the O-ring that seals the canister in its channel in the filter head. Of course, you'll need to get a new filter-head-to-block gasket.

Pizzi--

Take the car for a spin prior to draining the oil--hot oil drains better. If you have the original cannister, or if your spin-on filter element is in a vertical orientation, fill the cannister/element with fresh oil prior to reattaching.

I make a practice of cutting apart the filters to check the inside of the medium for metal bits or bearing material.

While filling the cannister with oil prior to fitting is probably a good idea, I have never had the dexterity hold the bolt in to prevent leaks while manipulating the cannister around the frame rails and motor while keeping it vertical so oil doesn't spill out. See how you do taking it out while full of oil, that may give you some idea of whether you can put it back in that way.

:iagree: Glempn.

I think you have all the trouble you need taking it off. However, if the entire assembly is separated at the block its less problematical. Similarly, putting it back empty and pressurising the system with the ignition key off is a better way to go.---Keoke

I am with you on that on Red Devil, I always spin it with the plugs out until I get some pressure on the needle, usually doesn't take long.

If I have a modern spin on oil filter - do I still need to put oil in before attaching it?

Thanks!
