Carpet Question

Sorry for another stupid question.

DPO Pedro had the K-Mart special TR6 carpet
glued directly to the body sheet metal.
A b.itc.. getting some of it out and the
metal cleaned up.

I now have TRF Wilton wool with TRF carpet underlayment
PLUS Moss Motors aluminum clad interior car insulation.
I have also read and re-read Paul's carpet install on his
web site.

Questions: 1. Does the Moss aluminum clad underlayment
take the place of the TRF standard underlayment? Or is it
only used in the footwells and tranny cover?

2. I had to 100% glue the aluminum clad to the
tranny. Is the clad always 100% glued? and then the carpet
glued onto the clad underlayment? Here is my tranny cover
with the aluminum clad installed.

thanks,

D

Dale,

I would say that it takes the place of the TRF under padding. I'm just not sure if it's what you want on the floors, but others may be able to answer that question. Try to avoid gluing anything to the floor panels that you've just fixed and on Wendy's side as well. You want to be able to get those up quickly and easily in case of water problems.

It is better to just glue the carpet to the padding and set it onto the floors. The center tranny cover is cardboard and will need the glue to hold the padding down.

Dale, you do have the carpet installation kit with the snaps to hold everything on the floor pans down, right? Those will be riveted to the floor and then the carpet will snap on to them accordingly.

Note snaps riveted to floor near big round plug and along middle of rocker panel cover carpet in this pic. There are more to match the snaps in the carpet:

Broskey's got it.
What I've done in the past is to glue the rocker, rear package tray, side footwell and tranny tunnel pieced down. Then the actual floor pieces are; fronts snapped down, and rears caught under the seat rails.
It might be a good idea to rig up some kind of velcro or snap setup for the tranny tunnel so you could get at the bolts if the need ever arises again, but It's not that big a deal to have to peel that piece back off if its glued.
I would not glue down the floor pieces as you may need to take them out in the event of a freak rainstorm soaking them.

From the factory, our cars had just the underlayment. The aluminum insulation is a modern add-on to help reduce cockpit heat.
I used it years ago when I had an old header installed. I plan to use it in my Healey.
TR6's don't normally create excessive heat. To install, I would first lay everything in place to make sure the carpets fit with it in place. Take into consideration that wool carpets are known to shrink a little.
I would install the aluminum to allow for it's removal in case the carpets do shrink. I would also run it short of the dash support to allow room for installation. Cut it a little smaller than the underlayment to allow the carpets to lay naturally. The underlayment edge should be cut about 3/4" inside the edge of the carpet.

Thanks one and all!

And I see I made a bit of a blunder.

For the life of me, I could not figure out what
function the snaps in the floor pan served. So,
since I was taking both floor pans down to bare
metal, I used a chisle and removed all the snaps.

Yes, I have the TRF complete carpet fastener kit.
I have been pondering where all the pieces go.

Ben, I kinda figured I would need some help from
Velco strips. I used two sided tape to hold the
tranny gasket in place.

PeterK- Thanks as always.

I think I will let the two coats of 2 part acrylic
urethane floor paint cure until Friday to gain extra
hardness. I don't want a Doc Bill nightmare this late
in the game.

regards,
