Dynamat Xtreme more than likely. inside door skins, floorpans, front and rear bulkheads. It has a little better sound dampening properties than the standard, and is temperature resistant over a much larger temperature range than the standard (from negative temps up to 300F). Should be fine even in the floor areas near the exhaust pipe. I'd probably still use a thin bit of padding for the carpets though.

The recommendation I had rec'd on Dynomat was to call up a local stereo install place, and see if they would sell you a 'jobber' piece. Apparently such shops would buy in bulk, and have larger pieces that can be cut to fit. I didn't go with it in the end, so no further experience here!
 
For a complete job, easy DIY job if your already getting ready to do the carpets anyway...(The stuff is just peel and stick, a small rubber roller will help get it into nooks and crannies) The materials will cost about 350-550 dollars. The results are worth it. If you can't afford enough to cover the whole floor, center the pieces on each panel (in fact this is how the door skins Should be done). Still makes a huge difference. highly recomended in my book for every restoration. Makes the car feel much better than new (heck even feels/sounds much better than some new cars).

Definitely do the Dynamat, but I suggest you don't use Dynamat brand product as it's very expensive. Another very similar product called Second Skin Damplifier does exactly the same thing and costs a lot less (close to half, if I remember correctly).

Aluminized on one side, rubber based product with glue already on it just like Dynamat. You'll do best with a wooden roller to get it down good and tight. Cover the firewall, floorboards, transmission tunnel, put some inside the doors where you can reach, even the trunk if you want to.

Cuts heat and noise significantly for a few hundred bucks, and you won't need any under-carpet padding. You can find the product on their website at https://www.secondskinaudio.com/ It was the best product in a comparison test done a few years ago and posted on a website whose name I can't recall. I have no connection with this company, by the way!
 
Thanks for all the advice and anecdotes..

I think I will buy 40 sq ft which should be enough to cover the main floor and tunnels, and anything else that I can cover with it..

To save a few $$, I will likely go with the 'Second Skin' brand that Drew has recommended... using their Damplifier product...

I assume the carpet is then glued or velcro'd in place over the liner using the 3M Contact adhesive...

I will buy, install, and let ya' all know what happens...

Gentlemen,

After much consideration and reflection...

I have decided to purchase a sheet of Damplifier from Second Skin...

Since I neglected to measure the A's interior space this weekend....

Anyone know how many square feet would suffice to cover the footwells, under the seat, tunnels, and battery compartment along with a bit for the 'behind the dash' firewall...

I have 'mentally' eyeballed the area and think that a 40 sq ft sheet should be enough..

I measured the carpet area last night and 40 sq/ft looks pretty close...

I hope that it attenuates some of the heat and noise... I doubt that I will notice the noise reduction... After all, we are talking about an MGA here. :smirk:

Hopefully I WILL notice a heat reduction... :smile:

I will be installing it, along with the carpeting, this weekend and will let you all know the results...

Ron, did you factor in any extra when you ordered the carpet? Inevitably, in my experience, what is measured comes up short in some way. 10-20% more gives some wiggle room, just in case.

I installed the Damplifier sheets under my carpeting and loosly installed the carpeting over it.

Results....

The padding reduced the road noise a bit. However, It did not do too much for the heat. There were several areas that were less than a good seal between the floorboards/tranny tunnel against the firewall that I was able to seal with the damplifier...

Since it has been 40 years since I drove or rode in a complete A...other than the one I have now...

Any comments from MGA owners about heat in the footwells??

Perhaps I assume too much to think that I can reduce the heat -- short of installing 4 inch thick thermal padding...

Ron, I used the second skin on my B, 40" did floors, trunk wall, battery cover and tunnels with enough left to try on the doors now that I've heard about it. As for carpet, I glued velcro grabbers to the second skin and then the fuzzy side was stuck onto that with the glue applied to the back, carpet weighted down overnight and it works fine. Didn't do much to the footwell heat though, even with it on the firewall. Anyone have experience with Moss' exhaust shield?

Thanks for the comment. I will likely do much the same as you have done on your B although the siderails, drive shaft tunnel rear of the shifter and battery section will be glued down. I will use velcro on the floorwell and front tranny tunnel carpeting..

I am starting the think that the 'toaster oven' will remain if I do not go to the next step and buy the thermal shield offered by both Second Skin and Dynamat.... I am not yet ready to make that commitment.

My 66 B does not display the interior heating problems of the A and does not have high-tech padding.

My wife is refusing to ride in the A during the day, waiting until the cool of the evening... This could be a good thing :devilgrin:

One other comment...

I am restoring a 58 AH 100-6 and I installed the asbestos-LIKE thermal shielding on the firewall and over the muffler that I bought from Moss. The Healey came with this as ORIGINAL equipment to the car..

I was thinking that it may be possible to buy another kit or find similar material and trim to fit under the footwells.

Not original for the A but may be another option to resolve the problem...

Anyone out there have experience with this approach??

I gotta say I am not sympathetic on the whole "toaster oven" thing with you roadster guys! Want a toaster oven? Try a sliding window Mini wagon on a 95 degree August day in Chicago in stop and go expressway traffic with NO carpet or insulation!!! THAT's a "toaster oven"!!! LOL :laugh:

The HOTTEST days I ever spent were August in Chicago....105 degrees and God know how high in humidity....

I shan't complain about San Diego and its balmy ocean breezes to you kind folks in HOT country Chicago... :devilgrin:

I may have a toaster oven -- you have a blast furnace... :smirk:
