Well I built a little jig to install the threaded insert.
Wish the press I borrowed from my neighbor had a clamping device on it so that I could hold it still.
When I tried to bore the lag out it got a little crooked.
So when I drilled my pilot hole for it...well it didn't quite get centered

Next question
The inserts are brass.
The bolt I am using is brass.
Cut the head off and cleaned the threads.
Should I glue the stud into one of the pieces??
If so...the post or the Finial??
 
I wouldn't bother with glue. I would just drill the hole in the post shallow so the stud could screw in only so far before it stopped. Then put a bit of anti-corrosion (Corrosion-X or similar) substance in the insert before screwing on the finial. You're just securing a non-load bearing finial to a post. The attachment doesn't demand much strength.
 
Silver anti-sieze works if the brass is being connected to a dissimilar metal and won't be subjected to heat.

In this case, just put a bit of silicon grease on it. You're only trying to seal it a bit from the atrmosphere.

Hard to keep that stuff out of things!
 
I hear you!! That's why in the absence of something like Corrosion-X, a silicone grease might be a good bet. There is also a product we use in airframe maintenance called Fluid Film ( https://www.fluid-film.com/products/.)

It was developed for the Navy to keep marine equipment from corroding and it's still popular today. It's a solvent-free corrosion preventive composed primarily of lanolin (wool wax). It can be bought online and retailers I don't know about but I also know that John Deere dealers sell it as well...12 oz aerosol can about $7. I keep a couple cans handy here.
