carbon /soot up the plugs

I am trying to get this tr3 to pop off quicker and not carbon /soot up the plugs. The compression is good and it has a store bought rebuilt distributor I got years ago. The usually suspects for this problem are rich adjustment on the carbs and weak spark, but I got them leaned out and tried another coil, but no joy. It was an old one also, so maybe they are both bad. I am starting to think it is the distributor and thinking about buying one of those new ones that BPNW is offering for 130.00 because I fixed a problem like this years ago by buying a NEW Lucus distributor. I guess I am asking how can a new distributor solve the soot problem, by moving the timing superiorly and burning the fuel better.

Might be as simple as selecting another spark plug. What are you using now ?

Thanks for your note poolboy and that is good advice. I am using Champions and have had good luck with them in the past. I might just have to buy some new stuff. I have been using stuff I have collected and it is perhaps shot. I just hate buying cheap junk. I think I will pull some stuff off the one that runs good and see if I can figure something out. It just seems like twice the work pulling the distributor off and putting it back on, but that should show me something.

Check your float levels, might be just a little bit low to start quick enough. Then lean out the sooty bank (1+2, 3+4) a flat or two until you get the correct plug color. Once these babies warm up the soot should burn off but recheck at cold starts until you get it right.

Champions worked well for me but switching to Bosch 4032s made it all better on my 58.

Thanks Peter I will purchase a set and set the bowls up. I have them set on the plus side of 7/16 thinking that might help with the soot. And, yes John if I ever get this thing sorted out, I might just take Randall’s advice and drive it like a swiped it.
