Car dies

hi

went to pick up Nigel today and it fired right up ran fine for about(I had no gauges what so ever) a mile the it just died. jumped it and it ran for about a half hour @ 55 mph then when i got back to town @ 35 mph it ran for about a mile then died wouldnt crank but i jumped it and again it fired right up made the rest of the trip about three miles various speeds and ran just fine

i did notice a few wires were off the alt. ( picts to follow) but any help or ideas would be great

Possibly bad condensor...if it ran great & went dead then when it cooled off it cranked & ran until hot.

With the brown/yellow wires dangling out into atmosphere like that and those daft crimp fasteners holding things together, I'd say there's an intermittant circuit for charging the battery as a problem. Looks as if you need to have a wiring diagram and some test equipment to hand. A VOM on the battery for starters to see if the alternator is putting current back into it. My bet is it ain't. Should see 13+ volts at the battery terminals with anything over idle RPM's.

yes the photo is scarry esp to me im color blind so im thinking of...
cutting each conector clean the wires
soder and shrink wrap all conections and test juice going back to the battery (with new terminals installed)
like the dr ordered

any other stuff to check while im at it

Do I see some cracked inslation as well? Give the whole place a good cleaning as well, no telling what you will find. Engine rooms should be as clean as the outside.

any ssuggestions on what to clean the engine bay with so i dont do further damage to my wiring? i was thinking simple green...?

That should be fine. Just be mindful of the dizzy, alternator and brake/clutch cylinders. Plastic grocery bags are your friends. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

That works just fine, get a selection of brushes, the softer ones like they use for baby bottles and such.

engine color is Chevy orange( i think )
the motor was done before i got him
