Car dies suddenly

Congrats on (presumably) finding the problem and on having a nice drive to and from Richmond!
 
This makes sense, if my understanding of how a ballasted system works is correct: in such a system, the full 12V is sent to the coil for starting, but for normal running the ballast resistor cuts the voltage by about half. If the resistor was intermittent, you'd get random engine stoppages. I think you found the problem.

Your understanding is correct. However I decided not to run a direct line (12VDC) from the starter solenoid to the coil for full starting current and have never had a problem firing off on the reduced voltage.

Looking at the resistor on the bench it is amazing that it conducted any power to the coil and obviously it was being held together by the fastener's pressure.
