what are you trying to diagnose? Old car new car? Electrics? Timing?
While I would one day love an old engine diagnosis machine but can diagnose 90% of what is wrong with a timing gun, a multimeter, a light bulb with alligator clips, etc. etc.
If I were to add to my diagnostic kit right now, it would be a code reader for my newer cars.

A feeler gauge, tach-dwell meter and an adjustable advance timing light. Multi-meter for electrical. These are basic.
