can't drive a straight line

well last weekend I got under Sparky. All u bolt nuts tight, the shocks have no bounce to them, they settle the car right away. When I looked at the wheels the drivers rear wheel seemed to be about 1/4 - 1/2 inch closer to the front of the arch than the right side. I tried to measure from a reference point on either side but nothing showed an issue so I think the arch may just be a little different shape.

Joel did you torque the nuts or just do em as tight as you could.

Bushings huh? Did not look there. If it ever stops raining I'll get under Sparky again, when I fix the leaky oil seal on the drivers side that I found when I took the rear tires off. See, I did find something to fix. New seals and brake shoes should arrive tuesday or wednesday.
 
I did not use a specific torque and I don't see one in the haynes manual. I just got em gooten tight. All of my bushings are shot so I am replacing them with polyurethene bushings. They should be here on Tuesday so I will update with the effect they have.
I am still at the point where I am at no loss of things to fix. I look forward to the day I have to look for something!

Looking for something to work on is a real bummer. Not fun at all. You go out to the garage all full of it ready to go and just stand and look, sigh.

Note to self, go out and break something.

Actually what I usually do is take the cover off and take a ride. Then put it back and put the cover on again. Sigh.

Over 60 miles now. Preaty soon is going to be time for check up.

I got my poly bushings installed all the way around. I am now waiting for a new A arm, wheel bearings (x4) and I just found out I am going to have to replace all four wheels! I'm gonna have $7000 in a $4000 car pretty soon. I'm not great with investments, but that doesn't sound right.

Anyway, it will be another week or so until I get it on the road for a good road test. I'll post.
 
Thanks. Looking forward to hearing your results. How hard was it to change the bushings. I have nevr done that. I am about to try to repair the rear seal oil leak, never done that either, got any suggestions?
 
Rear engine oil seal? There ain't one.
 
I havn't done the rear oil seal, yet, but the bushings weren't too bad. On the rear I dropped the entire spring, which made punching the forward bushings out easy. While I was at it I replaced my ubots (they were worn from being loose). The front was a little more challenging, but with the right tools, air tools that is, it was dooable (is that a word?). Using the 5" bolts to release the main spring was a must, saw that in the Haynes manual.

I should have most of it, minus the wheels and tires, done by this weekend.

Come to think of it, I will be doing the rear seals this weekend when I replace the bearings. I'll let you know how it goes.
 
According to Webster, neither dooable nor doable is a word. Doable, however, is in such common usage that everyone certainly understands what you mean. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
Oh, rear differental seal. Tis a pain, needs a real big bar or an impact wrench. Other than that tis no prob at all. As I remember torque is like 140 or 160 lbs.
 
No, Jack, I am talking rear Axel seals, or is that the same as diff seal. And if we are talking the same thing what needs 140 lbs of torque??
 
Diff seal 140 lbs. Axel seals easy, might spend a grand total of two hours total for both if you clean everything under there good. New seal, new gasket, new O ring.

Rear hub is 140, seal with halfshaft is much less.

Oh yea for sure. Just nice and tight that as it has one of those bendable washer things.

I got the axle seals done. Not too bad like Jack said. If you have the original metal case seals, you might want to heat everything up before trying to pull the seal.

If it slips out of the vise while you are pulling seal, don't reach down and grab it while it is still hot. I know this from experience!
