Yep. If you just tape them off, you'll find out really fast that it is wrong.

I believe you could put both ammeter terminals on one side of the vm and ground on the other .

I never tried that. It was recommended that I run a white wire from the ignition key to the voltmeter gauge and the other side to ground.

Rethinking this I forgot the vm would be drawing somecurrent when off ,unlike the ammeter,so yes the ign.switch or starter button.

With any of the brown wiring the 12V is not switched. A minimal draw from the volt meter would result. The white wiring is switched.
