Just put in the camshaft, oil pump and camshaft retaining plate. Endfloat measures about .021, specs say it should be .003 - .007, if not put a new endplate on.

Any ideas how I could be so off? Used a dial indicator...
 
You did have the front gear on the cam when you made this measurement didn't you? The endfloat is controlled by the fit of the triangular front retaining plate to the cam front journal and the back side of the timing gear. If 0.021 was measured with the gear installed and all the bolts tightened up, check the thickness of the front retaining plate. They wear down where the timing gear rubs on them.
 
I bet not(gear in place). If the gear was on and 0.021" was the float, the wear on that plate would be highly visible, methinks. It's buttin' into the pump at full rearward movement. Gear on, it'll be a LOT less.
 
Well...just reread assembly directions and saw that one set doesn't mention the gear, another set does. Thanks everyone for their input.

Sure sounds like that should be the problem. Be checking it later today.
