CA buyback program:what a waste [MB 450SLC]

This is the first time I've had first hand knowlege of a
classic car getting junked thanks to the CA (smog) car
buyback program.

A couple of days ago I responded to an ad where a guy was
offering a '73 Mercedes 450 SLC for $650. Its been in his
family for years (if not from new), and they just don't
need it anymore. Runs and drives fine, minor body scrape.
He needs to get rid of it, and CA offers to buy these older
cars for $650. He'd rather not see it crushed and turned
into a Honda (gasp!), so he's trying to sell it.

I've had a '73 450 SLC for the past 1.5 years, and its my
everyday ride. These are *really* nice cars, certainly
classics that folks should be collecting. Apparently thats
not the case. The seller has had to deal with a series of
idiots, and will be junking the car (via California)
tomorrow. What a waste!!!!

Needless to say, if I had any room left, I'd have it.

The worst part is that poluters get credit for taking the "gross polluters" off the road, many of which were in a dormant minimally polluting state anyway. By cutting pollution on paper this way, they are allowed to produce more actual pollution.

If the FDA worked like this, Oscar Meyer would be allowed to put more rat hair in the hot dogs if they bought rats from people.

That is so sad. Did he try contacting anybody in the MB club?

They would also need to implement rat hair testing stations to see if anybody "tampered" with their rat hair content after Oscar Mayer sold the dogs.

Think that's something, I left a little money in a credit union out there, figuring 'out of sight, out of mind'. One quarter there was a $100 withdrawal and deposit. Union told me that they have to do that because if the account has no action in over a year, the state claims all the money.

I am surprised that someone did not take this guy up on his offer. I think Hot Rod Magazine did a expose' on the California Gross Polluters crush law. THey picked up a 67 Camaro from some guy that was "in line" to turn his Camaro in for "crushing" They gave him a fair price for it and then did a article on the car and its restoration, I think they gave the car away in a giveaway. Sad this has to happen, and that there are people "out there" that are niaeve' enough to go and crush a classic.

Just more reason for me to hate California. Hopefully one day there will be an earthquake large enough to break California off from the US and it will sink to the bottom of the ocean with all its stupid laws, and people. For me that would be a good day.

I really give the seller of the 450 SLC a lot of credit
for trying to sell the car rather than just selling it to
the state, which would be far easier for him. Unfortunatly,
everyone that looked at the car tried to lowball him, and
he finally got fed up. I don't blame him for giving up.

Hey guys, don't rag on California too much. I realize that
much of the rest of the country thinks things are seriously
out of whack here. In many cases you're right. What you
don't realize is that a few loud mouth idiots
(environmentalists) have taken the rest of us hostage. The
pendulum is starting to swing the other way. There are
far more classic cars, and classic car nuts(myself included)
here than anywhere else in the country. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Environmentalists don't come up with this kind of silliness. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Bureaucrats trying to "look" environmentally friendly while kissing up to special interest business lobbies do.

[/ QUOTE ]I wonder what "special interest" benefits from getting all the old cars off the road? Think their initials could be "MG" spelled backwards? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
