This is the first time I've had first hand knowlege of a
classic car getting junked thanks to the CA (smog) car
buyback program.
A couple of days ago I responded to an ad where a guy was
offering a '73 Mercedes 450 SLC for $650. Its been in his
family for years (if not from new), and they just don't
need it anymore. Runs and drives fine, minor body scrape.
He needs to get rid of it, and CA offers to buy these older
cars for $650. He'd rather not see it crushed and turned
into a Honda (gasp!), so he's trying to sell it.
I've had a '73 450 SLC for the past 1.5 years, and its my
everyday ride. These are *really* nice cars, certainly
classics that folks should be collecting. Apparently thats
not the case. The seller has had to deal with a series of
idiots, and will be junking the car (via California)
tomorrow. What a waste!!!!
Needless to say, if I had any room left, I'd have it.
