Busted Exhaust Manifold

That's right. Busted clean in two. There was an ugly weld on there courtesy of the previous owner, so clearly this is not the first time that it has happend.

It is probably due to the car bottoming out over speed bumps. Austin is one speed bump happy town. There's probably an average of one speedbump every 2ft. in every parking lot in town. Considering that 96.478% of the population drives SUV's and Trucks, they're real effective too.

Anyway, I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, did you come up with any clever solutions?

Thanks in advance,

Morris

Morris,

You don't say what year/model so I'll assume it's a 1500 as they are prone to crack their exhaust manifolds. It takes an expert in welding castiron. In order to get a good weld the manifold must be heated, then welded while hot, and cooled down slowly. Even then it's only a matter of time before the weld re-cracks. Only solution is to either get another stock manifold or a header.

You are correct. It is a 1500, '79 to be exact. I have a friend who is giving me another stock header, but I am wondering if I am better off with a header. Peroidically replacing a very difficult to remove exhaust manifold is not my idea of Britsh motoring fun.

Thanks for the feedback!
