Bugeye Seat Covers

Whitephrog said:

Ray, thanks for the pics. I did decide to order from AH Spares. I ordered the seat covers, foam seat cushion (2), and foam seat squab (2). Did I miss anything?

Also in looking through your pics, you had a nice set of pics on doing the door pockets in black, but the ones in your car are red? Now that I have the seat covers coming I need to find a source for the vinyl for the dash and door pockets.

Thanks,

David

I am about 99% done with my seats (from AH Spares). They went together just fine with a few answers from others. I also bought the matching material for my interior panels. I have my patterns cut out of cardboard, and will transfer to fiberboard/masonite soon. Also enough material for dash and I have all extra holes plugged so should get to that soon.
The only problem I had with the seats was that the pulling and fitting caused my old hands to need periodic rests. That is why I am @ 99%.

Paul, where did you get the matching vinyl for the dash and door panels? I didn't see it on the AH Spares site.

Thanks,

David

The black set was my practice set. That vinyl was from Heritage Trim. They turned out well. I purchased enough extra red vinyl from AHSpares to do the dash. Dash vinyl and door pocket vinyl comes with the AHSpares panel kit. I redid my dash so I ordered additional matching vinyl from them. They will sell it by the yard. Just email them and let them know what you need.

David;
I order the matching material from AH Spares when I order the seat covers. I believe they told me how much I needed or maybe some of the resident experts here helped. If I can find my invoice, I can give you more info. Getting ready to start on my dash and interior panels this week after I finish a small home remodeling project that is also dragging on and on and growing.

David, RE: Did I miss anything? Do you have the clips? I used mostly the small clips, maybe a dozen large ones, and maybe a dozen more of the small clips than recommended for the total.
Good luck.
I used thin batting to cover all the metal parts too.

Clips were separate. Get a bunch. AHSpares part number is FSN120. I believe that I purchased mine from Moss-UK.

I used the first guy "picconeatqwest" -- I selected them primarily because I could get non black color. I went with a tan with choc piping. Got extra material so I could do the side panels and dash. all looks great.

As for the fit -- some were a little off. I would label that to more my installation job verus a botched cut.

I did have to have some pieces modified here locally. I've seen so many different parts that are not on my car & should be - seats could have been swapped sometime in the past. Noting major. If it's not too late, I can send you some pics of what I mean (if you have'nt bought others yet).

If I were to do it again, I still would use him.

After seeing the price for custom blue seat covers for our ’60 Bugeye at Moss, and priced out the shipping from AH Spares, I decided to make ours using the factory original cover as a pattern since I have sewing experience. I have since made 4 other sets out of marine vinyl (UV and mildew resistant). I have patterns for the Bugeye 1958-62 (Mark I), the 63-64 (Mark II sprite “horseshoe”) and the 65-68( Mark III sprite/ Mark II Midget). I have also altered seats that others have bought from Ebay that didn’t fit. Unfortunately a few companies are making seats that look like factory originals, except their proportions are wrong- so they will never fit properly no matter how much alteration!!
I have a set of black Mark II “horseshoe” seats with white piping trim already on factory original frames with non-rusty seat pans assembled and ready for purchase, if anyone is interested.
I am a nurse by trade, but enjoy sewing in my spare time. If anyone has questions about their car upholstery, I am happy to help.

AHSpares leathers vs vinyl. Leather on the left
and vinyl on right. Installed pic.
I have to say the leathers are very soft and comfy.

So here's the quote from AH Spares in British pounds. Looks good until you see the 191 pounds ($300) for shipping.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Code:</div><div class="ubbcode-body ubbcode-pre" ><pre>
XUPY101 SEAT COVERS-black/white-PAIR 1.00 139.50 EACH 139.50

XUPY152 FOAM SEAT SQUAB 2.00 9.35 EACH 18.70

TRP260 VINYL-BLACK-per metre 2.00 14.95 EACH 29.90

Moss is $769.85 for the seat covers and padding ONLY - with "free" shipping. At the current exchange rate of about 1.5, AH Spares is still cheaper, but the $300 for shipping still seams just wrong.

RickB wants to order a grill from them but doesn't like the high shipping. Maybe you guys can combine the order and help each other out on shipping costs.

This is good to know. I'm planning a trip to London next fall, might need to bring a few extra suit cases and stock up on anything I would ever need from there!

I challenged them on their shipping and they came down to 156 pounds by changing couriers, 4-6 business days for delivery - I will have it next week pending customs. 2nd choices were VB and Sports & Classics, but both were back-ordered on the seat covers.

I finally got Heritage Upholstery & Trim on the phone. Now I know why they don't post their prices. They are about 50% higher than Moss and they try very hard to sell you their $500 installation package. I'm sure their stuff is very nice, but overkill - IMHO - unless your doing a concours restoration. The guy I spoke with was nice, but a little arrogant. He told me that by choosing another vendor, I was devaluing my car.

At the end of the day, materials to rebuild the seats are going to be at least $600 (with shipping) no matter which vendor. Some have cheaper seat covers but charge more for foam, padding, vinyl. AH had the best total package and was the only one who supplied the clips for a reasonable price.
