Bugeye paint- what color where?

If you are using rattle can paint, I used a Plastikote colour called Hot Rod Black (T-3) I find gloss black typically too glossy - doesn't look factory. Hot Rod Black has sheen but it is not as shiny.
 
Actually the hinges were black as well. I know the concourse guide says otherwise but it is wrong. Or maybe they came both ways. The book "Healeys and Austin-Healeys, Peter Browning and Les Needham, June 1970, Page 181 shows an original underhood shot of a BE, Black Hinges. In fact the front frame under the radiator, and the uprights, were also black in that Pic.

Vehicle license plate, Brit. was PBL 75. The pics on that page, both were of a 1958 BE and were part of roll out advertising.

So just what is a person to believe??

Last I heard they were in the process of a new Concurs guide.
 
Great Car! The only detail I see which can be corrected easily is the Smiths rivoted label on the forward heater box cover. Maybe it's there but painted over? Someone sells the correct decal... Same idea as the valve cover decals.
 
The rivet on labels are available. I just forget to get one when I place an order. Sigh, one day.

Honest, I had a Bugeye in 1961 the master cylinder was natural and rusty even then.
 
I suppose it could be, but don't think so. But then that was so long ago.

I do remember it had a real metal cap. The plastic ones we use today came along some time later.

Sorry, What I meant was a stick on label that adhears to the current rivoted on tab. If the tab has been removed it might be easier to find another replacement with one in place and start over. (paints going to get chipped etc. in the rivot process anyway) Not saying there isn't an orignal type tab out there but... Probably a Moss item.. Have you checked?
 
I bought my Smith heater metal label from a/h spares and had it stamped. I have an original brake m/c cap, looks old and dented, but it is original. Plastic is just so, so bad to the bone.

Guess I best start chasing eBay again for a few up or down grade parts.
 
My car (42,868) does have some black paint flashed on the front of the frame and uprights, over the body color. Horler mentions it in his book under colour schemes. The paint is sloppy and random.

The Bugeye I'm currently restoring is very close to yours in chassis number. Our cars were probably made within the same week or two.

Do you have a BMIHT certificate? Mine was built June 27, 1960.

Gerard, that is lovely. I think the fresh painted bodies are super stuff.
 
Iris Blue. Mixed by correct color code. I got lucky and found the correct BU12 formula for the brand paint I'm using. Probably looks different on various screens though. It's lovely in the sunlight.

I liked it so much that I'm doing my Morris Minor pickup the same color. These a pre-sand and polish.
