Bugeye Luggage Rack, Speedo & Tach Jewell Inset

Re: Bugeye Luggage Rack, Speedo & Tach Jewell Inse

At the risk of editorializing a bit, I saw that Sprite on Ebay, and it made me heartsick. Chop it up like that for the completely inappropriate purpose of putting in a V8, then ditch the whole thing. Sacrilege!

Or, maybe the gals of Team Sprite would like another challenge...!

I don't doubt for a minute that this is practical.

I restore classic racing bikes as well as puttering with my Bugeye. Some of the old Campagnolo brake calipers had jewels in them. To restore these, I just go to a craft store and buy a bag of assorted plastic jewels; maybe a couple of bucks. In a big bag of fake jewels, I can usually find one that looks about right. A little sanding is usually required, but that's easy with plastic. I suspect that the same thing could be done with the speedo and tach jewels in Sprites--you'd have to find some small ones, though.

This has to be a mistake, too many old blue ones. There is a saying: When the bird and the (bird) book disagree, go with the bird. I'll stand with blue.

It's entirely possible. I've never seen a photo of an original Bugeye with both of the little lenses in place. Almost every car I've seen (even some restored ones) have no lenses at all.

Holder says Bugeye both red, and MG MK I Blue spedo, tac red.

I saw that Jack, so far that's that's the only guy on the red side. After talking with a very qualified LBC restoration guy, an e-mail from Colin Dodds, and as much common sense as I can muster; I think I'll go with the bird.

Had yours running yet Brian?

Re: Bugeye Luggage Rack, Speedo & Tach Jewell Inse

Gosh no, it looks like it runs though, at least I can sit in it and make engine noises. Can't pretend to back up yet, you may have noticed from the site photos that I haven't found a mirror yet.

Look at my Harley mirrors for a temp fix maybe. They are 13 dollars each and make no holes in anything.

Re: Bugeye Luggage Rack, Speedo & Tach Jewell Inse

The man who sent us the 1/4" blue and red plastic 1 1/4" dowels has more at $2.50 each including shipping for the first, $2.00 for the second or more. I.e, one red & one blue =$4.50 delivered. If you want to e-mail me, (brianp@ananda.org) I will give you his name and e-mail.
