Bugeye/Datsun 1.4 exhaust

Hi guys from a newbie......I'm putting a 1.4l datsun in my bugeye and I think several of the members have done the same. My question is ....What did you do for the exhaust? I want to route it 'straight down' like the original BE and prevent any chopping if I can do it. There's a pretty big hole in the body that will allow it to be done. If you have headers (which I think I'll have to do), did you have them made or are they available for direct purchase? I've looked around quite a bit but cannot find any. Thanks....Don [3 BE's.]

Somebody does make headers, but I think it might have been for the Morris Minor, in which it's more commonly installed.

Well if I could get this picture loading thing figured out I could show you! I fitted a A15 and 5 speed and used some cheap used headers off ebay. They were 3 pipe headers for an MGB. I cut them apart and completely reshaped them and they work great. You will have to make some up in a similiar fashion. I did it with the engine block in the car and a junk head with the various section's of pipe bolted to it then tacked everything together and tweaked till it all dumped where I wanted it to.

Kurt.

A little more info! You could get on the Ratsun forum or the Datsun 1200 forum and try to find a used header to modify. I believe someone makes new headers that fit datsun's but the dump is way different than we need. Also they are 4 pipe which just means one more pipe to change. I have another used MGB header to modify for my next project.
What are you using for a carburetor setup??

Kurt.

Hi Gerard....If you haven't seen it yet, there's a Morris Minor Woody on the' lainefamily.com/woody.htm 'site. The fella put a 1.5 l datsun in there and did a great job. He managed to 'cut the original exhaust header in a way to make it project down and then the piping carried it out to the muffler. It's a good looking car and the guy has a nice website. I have been looking at some of his pics to get some direction for my BE conversion. Look it up....it's cool. Don

Nomad...I'm using 1 1/4 SU's and have already modified the original intake manifold. I may have already answered you on the regular site and not on the reply button. Anyway, I crusing the e-Bay for an idea and maybe some pipes. Thanks...Don

Nomad,

If you like I will host the pix for you. I have an interest in this subject and would like to see what you have done. PM me if you want me to upload them and I'll send you my private email.

My A15 powered Bugeye has a header made from a 1500 Midget as well as the Datsun. The previous owner built the car in the late 80's/early 90's, so maybe headers for the Datsun A series were easier to come by (not sure what the availability is today). The flange as well as the first 2" of pipe from the Datsun header are grafted onto the 1500 Midget header, so it dumps out into the stock hole (straight down). I'll see if I can dig up some pictures.

Hi guys...Thanks for your input....I'll be eagar to look at any pics you all have. Thanks again.....Don

Hi Don,

I didn't have success finding that site.

what a great webpage! thanks 'cept now I have to go back to work.

Yes, even got a couple tips there!

Here is Nomad's picture. It was small so I enlarged it a bit but my tools are crude. Nifty intake!

How did you get that white finish? I've tried VHT and later Cermacote but both got rusty fast.

If readers would like to know more this pic probably doesn't tell alot. You should be able to see the only mod to the car which is the front cross member which is cut and moved forward. Left side motor mount is stock spridget to homemade bracket on engine. Right side is from Datsun motor mount to homemade mount clamped to spridget frame rail. Header used MGB flanges at the ends with a little welded on them. I used the original maniflold as a template. Center header dump was welded up from 1/8 plate to 1/4 plate on head. Small section of straight pipe from muffler shop down to MGB collector. No exhaust leaks! I have been welding since high school though. Intake maniflold is simple plenum welded to cut off stubs from stock down draft manifold. HS6 carb is plenty big enough to feed 80hp which I didn't expect to exceed. Car runs great and on the way to and from Midget 50 got fuel mileage right on either side of 40mpg not exceeding 70mph though.

Well just getting back from prior commitments and I see that when Tom blew this up it didn't come out so good. I had it down to 35K in an effort to get it to load. If you want more pics I'll send them to Tom and let him resize them. Header is high temp paint and, no, it won't last but I've always painted headers white just cause I like it and enjoy it for the little while it lasts.

Any questions??

Kurt.

Here it is, a great reference.

Ahh... I see... (capitalization matters in URL's) [/QUOTE]

That's entirely server specific.

(sorry, ex web master turned data jockey)

Capitalization does not matter in the URL domain name, only in the portion following and (as Rick said) depending on the server/configuration.

Hi Nomad...Great pic.....canyou get a shot of the front cross member? I'd like to see what and where you cut it. My project is moving along.....I have some pics too of the BE on my homemade rotisserie but "I ain't smart 'nuf" to get them on this site. I'll figure it out though--with help from this kid down the street.
