Browser speed?

OK - this is driving me even more nuts than I usually am.

Different browsers have *very* different speeds for the same site.

If I clear the cache and go to:

https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcforum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=378439#Post378439

... it takes five seconds to fully load the page using Safari. It takes 20 seconds to do the same using Firefox. Waiting 20 seconds to open a thread is crazy.

With no filters or ad blockers or script blockers, why the heck is Firefox so much slower than other browsers?

I have 3Meg cable internet, which I've verified at 3000 download and 768 upload.

Do other folks notice this browser difference? If you load the above BCF link, how long does it take to fully load the page?

And what browser are you using?

Thanks.
Tom

Firefox, blocked popups, FC6 O/S, Smoothwall for a firewall device, FiOS... Certainly weird Safari slams it and FF struggles.

The Mac version of Firefox has not been as speedy as the Windows or Linux version for some reason. I'm running the latest here (10.5.1) and things seem to be relatively even for me across browsers.

Must be exactly what Drew says. Firefox for Mac is for some reason much slower than FF for other OS's.

Weird. Even if I turn off scripts and images, it still takes 15-20 secs. to load a single BCF page (homepage, thread, etc.).

Bizarramundo.

On my OLD DECREPIT win 98 machine W/Firefox Ver 1.0 Comcast cable connection, takes inbetween 3 and 4 seconds. {I have NO other browser to compare it to so I can`t say how fast the others are.}
Cashe - off {Set to O KB disk space}
cookies - off {NO cookies can load} {If I want to log in I turn them on}
history - off {remember visited pages for the last 0 days}
Saved form info - Off
saved passwords - off
Popup Blocker - on

Firefox loads these pages in 1s or less 99% of the time for me on Windows XP and Windows Vista... IE 7 on the other hand is a painful and slow process... ridiculously slow... never timed it but I'd have to put IE7 at 30s or more to load each page...

My Microsoft browser has been near instant this week so far.

Tis great.

PEBKAC or PICNIC problems (problem exists between keyboard and chair / problem in chair not in computer)

Did I mention the time my new boss called and said he couldn't find his email? I went to his office, saw that he had MSWord covering up his email app, and told him to move the mouse to the upper right and click the red "close" box. You got it - he picked up the mouse, put it on the screen over the red box, and started clicking.

"It just keeps clicking and clicking and clicking."

Oh the joys of network admin!

By the way, thanks for all the "timing" reports. If I use the "generated in ..." at the bottom of each BCF page, I can find out how long it takes for BCF to create that page.

This page took 0.041 seconds per the info at the bottom.

However, it's not the BCF's page creation that's slow for me, it's the arrival and display of the page on my screen that takes forever. Altho' the page was "created" in 0.041 seconds, it took about 11 seconds to finish loading on my 'puter.

Onward through the fog!

Mebbe FF is allergic to that Mac OS X thingie. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Gotta be some inherent cacheing scheme or other 'translating' kludge t'wixt the two. Since I've absofreakinlootly NO Mac familiarity this is beyond me. I'm clueless.

What sort of connection speed do you have? YOu can go here:

https://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html

And test your speed.

I use Flock which is backed by Photo bucket and Flicker. A pic button is in the tool bar and a photo stream can be enabled which I think is pretty cool. I don't see that much difference in Flock and Safari loading on my machine. For me, if the BCF loads slow, it's on their end, not mine anymore. I've tried IE, Moz, FireF, Netscape, Flock & Safari. I wouldn't give a nickel for Netscape, but the rest all load about the same. Of course I have a duel processor, a ton of RAM and enough hard drive space to park a couple of cars in. My old machine was slow on the net. This one flies. As far as Safari goes, it looks like a 10 year old program. Dull and dreary looking. Reminds me of an old upgraded DOS program when old W 3.1 was just getting off the ground. Yeah, I was around then! My first computer was a Commodore with no hard drive, just 5.5 floppies.

Sure you do, Doc. It's just Unix (BSD) under there. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
