bonnet grill

Has anyone ever tried to grind off and round the bottom of the small grill on the bonnet so it will not scratch the paint? I have seen the split plastic tube used by British Car Specialist but I thin it looks tacky.

I did, using a hand polishing stone. I also lined the underside with a layer (or 2?) of blue painters tape.

And to top it off, no, NOT with a Cherry; I cut three (3) short-short pieces of rubber vacuum hose to go over the studs. This allows the Keps nuts to be tightened to only *snug* and hold the assembly tight without distorting where the studs are welded.

A lot of trouble for one (1) stupid piece of chrome, that a factory worker likely installed in eight (8) seconds!

I use the 3M strip caulk on the inside. Virtually invisible plus holds the grille firmly in place. Also keeps water out etc.

Another item to be concerned with is putting indents marks in the air intake from torking down too much on the 3 bolts. BCS sells a 9" grille packing pad, cuttable, just for this installation. Part number 14B 9484 Grill Packing.

Is this the problem you're trying to avoid?!

I wish I knew about this forum 28 years ago when I installed this grille.

Yes, that and the chipping occurring at the bottom of the grill along the length that occurs from vibration and bonnet closing.
Thanks for all the ideas. I think I will grind it down, round and polish the sharp edge. I will also apply some of the 3M stuff as I have a bit of it.
They just emailed me that the car is ready to be picked up on Monday. I am excited as they are ahead of schedule.

That's where I put three (3) stubs of vacuum hose (over those studs)perhaps 3/16 - 1/4" long . See my post above.
