BN2 Trans-reverse problem

I have owned this car since 1983 and I have always had a problem shifting into reverse. It seems I can't get the gears to fully mesh and hold in reverse. I must really pull to the left and back real hard on the shifter to engage reverse and if I am backing up a hill, I must hold the shifter lever down to keep it in reverse. Is there some adjustment that I might do to remedy this problem? Thanks.

Mike

Hi Mike,
The only easy problem to fix would be if the shifter boot or carpet were preventing the lever from going all the way or a problem with shifter bottom bushing wear. (A small sleeve that goes over the inside bottom shifter ball.) These can be checked from top side. Otherwise it is likely to be internal shifter wear, or gear/bearing wear.
