BN1 door check replacement

Hello friends of old machinery !

One small question about a (minor ?) concern...
My left door check is broken. I'm thinking of replacing the whole assembly, but worrying about the poor access to the rear side of the A-pillar.
According to your experience, do I have any chance to :
1) remove the fixed part fitted to the A-pillar, without removing the left fender / wing ? I'm afraid that it might be necessary in order to gain access to it, and
2) fit the new part, by sliding it into the hole of the A-pillar ? Even if 1) is ok, 2) could be difficult or impossible to do, due to the strap - absent for 1) because it's fallen inside

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Regards,

Matt

I'm pretty sure you have to remove the wing, as the bulk of the assembly is on the 'wrong' side of the pillar.

Thank you for this opinion.
I'm afraid I should, yes, even if today I finally managed to extract the broken one...
I'm going to source a replacement part, and see if by customizing its shape I might be able to put it through the hole - I know, can't help dreaming...

G'day Matt, I'm pretty sure that only BN2 type door checks are available so some modification will be necessary on your BN1. The 'fenders' or wings were fitted to my car when I installed mine but I recall it was a tricky job.

Thank you Pan.
When I placed my order, the door check pictured on the web site seemed very similar to mine - otherwise I wouldn't have taken the risk to buy it...
This is rather consistent with your comment, as my 100/4 was built on '55, so might have the same technical definition as your BN2 in this area.

I ordered mine from one of the British places. On their web site they had the door checks reversed. The BN2 has a rubber buffer the BN1 does not. I hope this helps.

BN1's had two types of door check stays, only in recent times has the very early type become available, as the cars get older parts it seems are becoming easier to source

Job done.
I finally managed to insert the new part through the (not so) big hole of the pillar - while securing it with a wire, in order to prevent it falling into the fender...
No modification was necessary because - I suppose - my car is a late BN1, and the part is fitted with the rubber buffer.
Thank you all for your information.

Wish I'd read this post a few days ago, may have saved you some time.

My car is an early BN1 with the hard to find door checks. I tied a long piece of string to the original part then removed the screws. It dropped to the floor taking the string with it. I then replaced the original part with the new part, and pulled the other end of the string until the door check was in place.

Clever! I'll remember that one.
