BJ8 Overdrive oil leak

Hi
In process of removing transmission on a 65 BJ8 to and noticed a pool of oil sitting around the output
shaft lock nut when I released the propshaft does this mean the rear oil seal has failed or is it possible for the oil to seep along the coupling splines and out into the gap between the couplers of the overdrive and propshaft ? Also is it possible to replace the rear oil seal by just removing the coupling and not having to strip down the O/D.
Any help would be appreciated by a new custodian of this beautiful car.

Sounds normal , it's the automatic rustproofing system they installed on every Healey .

Sounds good but if the tranny is coming off any
way would it be prudent to replace the seal
thanks for your reply.

Yes, it's possible to replace the rear oil seal without stripping down the overdrive. It drives in from the rear after you remove the universal joint coupling. The old seal can be pried out, or drilled for self-tapping screws and then pulled out by gripping them. Drive in the new seal until it is flush with the O/D casing.

Congratulations on becoming the latest custodian of a BJ8! You have excellent taste in automotive machinery. Now, please allow me to add your car to the BJ8 Registry to join the other 8,733 cars already there (more than 49% of total BJ8 production), or allow me to update the ownership history in case I already have it. You can do that by going to the Austin-Healey homepage of the forum and clicking on the BJ8 Registry button at the top.

Thanks!

Side note: Years ago, I had to replace one of the yokes; don't recall if it was the (front) one on the propshaft, or the one on the O/D, and the grizzled old machinist at one of the local shops said it was the same as used on Volvos of the era. We used the 'Volvo' one and it was a perfect match; my guess is Jensen made these or Austin and Volvo used the same source. The Volvo P1800 body was built by Jensen IIRC (and early Volvos use SU carbs).
