BJ8 is running a bit rough. . .

First post here, guys.

I have a 1965 BJ8. Recently I replaced a cracked distributor cap. Checked the wiring and everything seems to be fine. Each plug is getting spark as well. The problem I am having is that when I get the engine on the road up to about 2,000 RPM I get a bit of sputtering. I do not hear/feel the sputtering at idle. I checked the gaps of the plugs and they are within spec.

Any ideas? I know that is not a lot to go on.

With what brand (cap)? I've had similar problems with an aftermarket cap (think it was a Bosch). The best caps are good ol' Lucas (believe it or not). Also, if you're using suppression wires they can fire intermittently (stranded copper wire is best with stock-type caps).

Welcome to the Forum.

I bought the Lucas cap from Moss. The wires are stranded. Just remembered that the wire cap came off cylinder #1's wire, but I tested it and there was good continuity after I reattached it. I may replace the wires anyway.

Some of the new caps have the wire-piercing screws drilled off-center in the hole in such a way as to not properly pierce the wire as well as hold it in place. I had one where the screw would sort of "nick" the end of the wire and pretty soon the wire would come undone.

Advanced Distributors sells a top-entry cap using normal push-in wires. This might be the way to go:

They also have the plug wires too and the correct rotors.

I've heard from a trustworthy source that some suppliers are buying empty Lucas boxes at flea markets and elsewhere and putting 'counterfeit' parts in them. I wonder if distributor caps are subject to this (last I checked, 'Lucas' caps were going for over $40, and a fake could probably be manufactured for just a few bucks)?
