The rubber strip mounts to the chrome strip. The clips also are used to secure the chrome strip to the top of the door frame. It can be tricky to get the strips lined up to attach to the door top and I usually push in on the center of the chrome strip when I install it.

Ok so just so I'm clear here ..one side of the Z clip has the chrome and rubber in it then the open side goes onto the top edge of the door when the chrome/rubber strip is put into the door ?

If I remember correctly, putty is used under the strip to eliminate vibration and secure the center and bottom.

We are just doing this now to our 64 BJ8. Here are a couple of photos that might help. Not sure we have the "putty" the way it is suppose to be. At first we had the clips on wrong, but look at the photos closely to see how they attach. The s shaped clips grab the seal to the waist strip and then the other part of the clip slides down over the top of the door frame. Good luck getting them on carefully.

Original 67 BJ8 , mastik wasnt perfect from factory, but you get the idea , you can see from the new waste seal the factory edge was at the rear and as original, slightly cut angle. The front needs trimming to meet the quarter window part of the frame and has a slight overlap to seal wind. Use factory indents on the back of the seal for clips.

Here are some more shots of the original mounting, of note is how the inner fuzzy seal extends through the chrome frame to seal wind noise, this car has a gap so Im thinking this is how it was sealed from noise, just trim to meet frame if yours has no gap. It seemed the fuzzy part was also trimmed a little but the stainless bead definatly went along the frame post.

Hope these details help , this is how I do it , just as they did.

Also forgot, there is a slot at the back of the door that part of the rubber slides into, when installing the chrome finisher to the door top, see last pic, you can open it up slightly then after installation pull the metal back with a right angle pic to tighten it up.

When "putty" was mentioned, I was thinking that butyl rubber strip caulk would be a better, modern substitute. Looks like you thought so too!

The "putty" I used is 3M strip calk, which can be used a lot of other places. I will use this under the Aluminum pieces on the top that the weather stripping attaches for example. Butyl to me is the very sticky stuff which is used on windshields and the stuff around AC fittings? The 3M stuff is not hardening and while sticky is not extremely so.

I'm no stranger to it, and use it regularly here (on every car I do the trunkfloor reinforcement on).

I keep it in the fridge until I'm ready to apply it; makes it a lot easier to handle, without sticking to things I don't want it to__like my fingers! There's two (2) boxes in there now ;)

Make sure your waste seal is completely down on the back of the chrome door cap. It looks like it is slightly up, It will keep popping up due to the newness of the seal when the window goes up and down, It will eventually stay upright, sometimes they do suck down when the window is rolled down. There is a slit in the rear (end) top of the door sheetmetal that the seal end needs to go into, the chrome also goes in there too if I remember, it will hold the seal from popping up as in your picture as the last clip is not far enough from the end and the slit was designed to hold the end in place.

nice lines on the door and finishers, good job !!!
