T-Series Big Day in the Shop Yesterday

Aloha All,

The rebuilt engine for my TF roared to life yesterday. Only a few minor problems like oil weeping here and there, minor timing adjustment and I need to fiddle with one of the carbs but very satisfying. It last ran in 2009 just before I totally disassembled the car. Since then, crank turned, new main and rod bearings, new pistons and rings, cylinders bored, new cam and bearings, new tappets, valve springs and a couple of exhaust valves. Distributor and SUs rebuilt. Assorted nuts, bolts and studs replaced. Now on to body construction.

Hey, Dave - good to hear you're making progress.

When you get tired of it, ship it my way!

Fantastic! That's a great feeling, the first time an engine fires back up.

Its always great to hear that another one is on its way to getting back on the road ! What kind of shape is the body in? Is the wood in the tub ok? I was lucky with my TC in that regard, though it isn't perfect. I imagine Hawaii can be hard on one of these, in the midwest most of them weren't driven in the winter. Kevin IMG_1629.jpg

Aloha Kevin,

Most of the sheet metal is fairly good and I have donor pieces to fill in the parts that aren't. The wood bits have a combination of dry rot and termite damage. I have all the wood pieces from a guy who decided buying a complete body tub was easier than assembling one stick by stick. I started on replacing all the wood, but it is a slow process of fitting parts together to check for fit before final assembly. I've had this car since '72 and it's been in Florida, California, Virginia, New Jersey and Rhode Island before Hawaii. I didn't drive often in snow but I have.

Aloha Rick,

The British Car Club of Hawaii will be meeting at Gordon Biersch (Aloha Tower market Place) next Tuesday, 9 February about 6:00 PM. We will probably have a tech session later in the month. Let me know if you're interested. I live in Kapolei, so I could give you a lift if you're interest. My first LBC as an Austin Healey 3000 BJ8.

Aloha Basil,

The salt air is a problem depending upon where you live. The windward side (Eastern side facing prevailing trade winds) is more problematic for salt air but southern coasts can be a problem when Kona winds in the winter bring in salt air and VOG (Volcanic out Gases). Some areas have tropical rain forest climates which are probably worse. Fortunately, on the leeward side a few miles in from the coast it isn't much of a problem. Good paint, washing and waxing help keep corrosion under control.
