Bent pushrods

Thanks Paul.
I just saw that post and sent him a e-mail. Got the supercharger off and the oil cooler off and drained, and a few other things done tonight.Gonna pull the motor on Sunday. Thanks for the offer Paul but I think this guy might work out.

Hopefully that works out

Just picked up a new head this evening. Going to the machine shop on Monday to do there magic.. Funny thing about the supercharger it makes your right foot about 2 lbs heavier than normal...

....and your wallet lighter.

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

Just spent the day removing the engine and did a complete tear down. When I got to the crank it would spin free for 180 degrees then bind for the other 180 degrees. The main bearings looked good. ???
As for the valves the # 8 exhaust and #1 exhaust looks like they were up in "the bowl"

I am going to take all the moving parts to the machinist tomorrow. I understand the valves (got a new head on Friday) But the binding concerns me.......

As it should. Most likely, it means the crank is bent.

Dumb question . But how does a crank bend?

I've heard of them bending enough to cause problems, just being left laying sideways on a shelf (so they should always be stored standing vertically if not inside an engine block).
Otherwise, I don't know the mechanism, only that iron and steel sometimes distort a bit with heat cycles and age. Any machining operation (like grinding the journals) can cause them to distort as well. (So any good crankshaft service should be able to straighten it for you.)

Thanks Randell!
As always you are a great source of Knowledge!

There was only .003 of clearance of the thrust washer could that have caused the binding?

Yeah, I read about some cranks bending if stored incorrectly. But, if USED bent, you should have a "radius ride" show up in the bearings......being a very worn spot on one side or the other, all the way around upper and lower.
How far down was it torn when you did this rolling test? Pull the timing chain and do it again. Then pull the pistons one at a time and do it again.

If you are dissasembled to the crank I think it must be bent crank or distorted block or bad set of bearings. Can you still get the .003end play when you have it in the tight area?
Tom

It was disasembled to the crank. The main bearings look good. But one of the connencting rod bearings is showing a lot of wear. It was the #4 piston. There was only about 12,000 miles on this motor

Update.... Machinist say the crank is cracked..... How much for a used one?

but my used one is cracked!

If you are going all out with this engine why not look for as billet steel crank. Moldex makes one for TR3-4's. Not cheap, but hey as our friend says, "it's only money." LOL

John

Just my opinion, but I'd say the price depends on how big a hurry you are in. Whole blocks show up pretty frequently for cheap money, so you could score both a crank as well as a spare head with a little time.
