Bill - what was causing the run on?
I've had that on my 78 since the last time we reinstalled the drive train.
Well - I see you have have a transplated powertrain, so it probably won't apply to you. And frankly, I don't know what I did that fixed it - I pulled the carbs, cleaned all the years of oil and dirt that coated every conceivable surface, reassembled and reinstalled. I noticed that when I barely pushed the piston up on the front carb that the engine would kill, so I adjusted the mixture a few flats to the rich side.
I then soaked the air filters (the orginal ones with the steel gauze/shreds) in gasoline and then poured some motor oil through them.
Reinstalled and execpt for the idle problem (and leaking gas) it runs pretty darned good. Shuts off and no run on!
This was the first time that I drove the car in any real heat and the temp climbed to about 190...and except for some moments sitting at lights where it might have hit 200, it ran consistently cool. Yay! (I've had issues with all of my new acquisitions running hot. I did notice that I get a little clunk when I shift into first (yes, from a stop) - so I'm not sure whether to worry about that or not.
