BCF Military Service Poll?

Ok this has nothing to do with politics. I'm trying this in another forum too and just wanted to simply a poll of those BCF'ers who ever served in the military.

That includes draftees, volunteered and even all you officer types too (;)). Heck I don’t give a rat’s A.. err. Behind - if you served in peace time or in time of war. I just want to break it down to get a head count for each branch of the military represented here in the BCF.

Likewise I’d like to open this up to all of my fellow British Car fans here who’ve ever served in foreign militaries too. Heck I don’t even care if you where even an enemy combatant of the USA's at one time – you’re still welcome to vote. Now I realize that not ever nation has an Army, Navy, Airforce or Marine Corps like the US does, so just go ahead & pick the one that applies best.

As for those who saw service in mutable branches of the military (two or more) I would like you not to be offended & just pick the one that best fits. Of course if you feel like it - go ahead & post what other branches of the military you served in too. Suggestion is to go ahead & pick either the first branch or the one you served the longest in. I know one guy who served in the Army for 15 years yet still calls himself a Marine because he joined that branch first. But again its your choice.

Oh & just so nobody feels left out - I’ll include one for Merchant Marines in the poll too.

Let the inter-service rivalry begin! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

I'm glad you included the Merchant Marines. Too often they are not mentioned when we speak of the armed services. Imagine this, you are on a ship in the north Atlantic, loaded with bombs, small arms ammo, and a half million gallons of aviation fuel. The north Atlantic is loaded with German submarines. At any time a German torpedo could hit your ship and it would almost vaporize. Talk about a stress factor! Also those ships carried life saving supplies to England to help them survive the terror they were encountering. My Dad was a Merchant Marine and somehow, thank God, he survived. They deserve a heck of a lot more credit than they get. As I've been told, their held in the highest esteem in England. My Dad is 92 years old and still healthy. To this day he never talked about the war.

Shout out to all the undersea, sun-dodging, pale-skinned, B-12 deficient keepers of the sea-lanes out there.
T-class SSNs, 91 - 97.

Darn right they are held in high esteem. I would wager that should he visit the UK even today, once he made it known that this is what he did, he would not have to buy a pint for the duration of his stay..........

29 years, been everwhere, done most things at least once and some lots of times.

I did not serve but was a dependent for 16 years of the 20 years my dad was in the Airforce. Lived in Japan 4 of those years.

Hey Bob,
I spent a year at Huachuca also. Huachuca, Vietnam, Germany. Did you have anything to do with Mohawk aircraft?

This is the sister ship to my dads. The John Brown. It is the only surviving operational Liberty Ship left. It is owned by a group of ex Merchant Marines as a memorial to those who served. My dads ship, the John Ireland, was lost at sea during the end of the war. Fortunately for us, he and my uncle were transfered to another ship just before that trip. Would that be fate, pure luck, or an indication of a higher authority?

My dad was a welding leaderman on those WWII Liberty Ships out of the shipyards in Houston during The War. He spent the entire war doing his duty. Not bad for an immigrant.

I did my duty in the Army 1970-72 as a drill captain (dentist).

Howdy Bret;

Bill, My dads ship, the John Ireland, was built at the Todd-Houston ship yard in Way # 8. Your dad might have helped build it.

My dad helped build those same ships in Pittsburg. I remember going to a launching that my Grandmother did the bottle thing.

Hey eejay,... I wasn't involved in anything quite so glamerous. Was in Communications Security at STRATCOM, in Arizona. Personnel Services in Vietnam, and War Plans in Germany. All in all, pretty "cushy" jobs. The one in Vietnam got exciting sometimes. In Arizona, the highlight of the week was to drive down to Bisbee and watch'em puor slag down the mountain...not much going on.
Take care Bob
