Spitfire Back to the Spitfire - Questions

Ok, I have been neglecting the Spitfire (78) for too long and the wife is starting to bug me to get it running or take it to the salvage yard! So, I have the engine out and have installed new rings. I had the motor rebuilt several years ago and ever since it was leaking oil out the rear end. I tried changing the rear seal twice to no avail, which led me to investigating other potential causes. Someone on here suggested I might be getting too much crack case pressure, which prompted me to pull the engine again and pull it all apart and check everything! What I found was, the people who rebuilt the motor before did not get the ring gaps right. In fact, the gaps were more than double what the book says is max. This made me think that maybe the excess gap was causing excess blow-by into the crank, which in turn could be the cause of my incessant oil leak (which usually only occurs when I shut the motor off). Anyway I have new rings that are properly gapped so I'm hopeful that will resolve the oil leak.

Now, the car currently had DUAL Weber 40 side drafts and a slightly hotter street cam. However, I think the dual Webers are too much carb for this little car for street use, so I want to drop it down to a single Weber 40 DCOE.
Question: Where is a good source for a manifold that will work for this application? Also, does anyone have a Spitfire with a single Weber side draft?

Basil

I think Cannon 99003.804 is the right application.

Cannon

I've only seen one single unit 40 DCOE Spit, it had a Cannon...

If you already have the dual carb manifold & linkage set up, I'd stick with it. The carbs can (mebbe should already) be choked/jetted down and should be FINE for the thing. And mileage should actually be through the roof (to the GOOD) if they're set up right. Spend no money unnecessarily!!!

Ok then mr man, if I stick with the duals, you will hep me set them up right - right? of course I knew you would.

A round-trip ticket would almost certainly have influence...

I can't believe the boss is asking this question.

I would check the sponsors!!!!

Oh I will, check them but given this would not be a "stock" manifold, I would assume there would be other than the usual suspects for such a manifold. On the other hand, if I stay with the dual setup per Doc's suggestion I already have the manifold.

Two 40mm Webers are FINE, durnit!!!

With proper chokes and jetting they will be at least as efficient as that poxy ZS thing it started with and FAR better than trying to bolt a single 40 to it.

Alright alright! You've convinced me! Two 40's it is!

I'm waiting for Don's response here.... Ba dum bum....

If that's aimed at me I had better recheck my humility

Stunned on two fronts! The boss has taken my not-so-subtle advice and Don is nonplussed.

wow.

ah.

i shoulda know'd. :smirk:

Sorry, couldn't resist
It's that little devil that sits on my right shoulder. Doesn't listen to the little Irish guy on my left

There's really no question what I'd do.

I'd run the stock single carb ZS (1500) manifold and fit an HS4 SU (MGB carb). I ran this on my street Midget for a few years.....an easy, nice combo that works well.
