The good news is that there is/was life. That bit of encouragement should help give you incentive to keep going.
Coils don't often go bad. The problem is likely to be elsewhere. I'd repeat your test with a spark plug (and a single wire) connected directly to the center post of the coil... bypassing the distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires completely. That should help you pin down where you are loosing the spark.
Anyway, give that some thought and congratulations on getting that spark even if it only lasted for a second or two. It's all very encouraging.
