I want to seal the Keen Zerts in to the block . Is Permatex Red the strongest one?

Well,,,,,,,,
Long story but here goes.
The inserts I got were the heavey duty ones. And when I was stepping up the drill size I was getting a little concerned how much meat was left on the block and I still had to go from 17/32's to 37/64's.
i decided not to use the heavy duty ones and order the regular ones. As it turned out the drill size for them is 33/64's and I had already drilled to 34/64's so I want to glue them in there.

Yes the red stuff is the high strength.

buy it by the pint can around here.

that extra 64th ain't gonna matter.

Half a 64th on each side.

GREEN Loctite is th' meanest, BTW.

It is when there is less that an 1/8th to the edge.

Yea, I understand, but as far as your tap goes. You are definitly running out of meat there.

That's why I want to use the best adhesive.
Do you think the 1/64th drill extra will matter or am I hosed?

A 1/64" = about 0.016" -- divided by 2 = 0.008"/side. You shouldn't be hosed, especially in the size that you are working with.

Edit: According to this chart, (I'm assuming a 9/16"-18 size) you will be getting a 50% thread instead of a 75% thread, which is acceptable in most situations. How long are the Keen-serts or whatever you're using?? They should be at least 1 1/2 times the diameter...two times would be better.

The inserts are 9/16 12 outside thread

Oh boy!!! According to the chart I linked to, 9/16"-12 should be 31/64" for 75% threads, and 33/64" for 50% threads. You may have a problem here. I don't know what to tell you at this time. Let me think about it for awhile, or maybe someone else and come up with something.

I called McMasters about that. The instructions for the inserts say use a 33/64 Drill bit. And then the 9/16 tap

The tap instructions say drill a 31/64th hole for the tap.

They said go with the insert instructions.

Don.....don't use the standard tap chart for the KeenSerts..... go with what the KeenSert instructions say to use. We went around on this with Patton's TA repair kit and decided that KeenSert has a reason for specifying that tap size and it probably has to do with the lugs that get driven in after inserting the KeenSert.

Art: That's a nice chart. I notice that for #12 and above they list 3 thread sizes. For example, 1/4-20, 1/4-28 and 1/4-32. I hadn't seen that before.

If 20 is course and 28 is fine, what is 32 called? super-fine?

Thanks,

Frank

Whole lotta different types of Loctite, not all identified by color. 'Green' usually means 290 , while 277 is 'Red' and stronger in most ways than 290.

But 620 might work better here.

I almost made the same statement over the "red" term... decided it weren't worth it.

Why do I have this feeling ya can't get 620 at your local NAPA
