NGK 5's If it ran well why change?? You say you replace every 5K do you mean clean and gap?? I tune-up maybe ounce a year TR 6 I do not remember how old my plugs are. I have electronic not points. If I go into town in the TR it is a 100 mile round trip and add a club run it is over 200 miles. not much stop and go in Nevada.

So what plug and why ( some help with this guys ) fuel grade., motor temp as in thermostat, points or other, stock or hot coil, elevation to sea level above or below 4,000 feet, damp condition, and on say 6cyl motors look at the back plug for true reading it's hotter back there. Inside the cyl can only be seen by the plug color. Madflyer

Hi,

1+ for the NGK Iridium spark plugs. Rock Auto has good prices. The heat range I have is a 6. They get dark at idle, but look great after a good run. I might buy (2) #5's and put them in cylinders 1 & 3, leave the 6's in 2 & 4. Then swap them 3 &1, 2 & 4. Should have a good idea after two week ends.

Years ago I would put a couple of Champions, AC's, NGK and Autolite's in a V8 (340 six-pack Cuda. and tested them. Then I tried heat ranges.

Hi Roy Let me know the results if you do that experiment with the 5's and 6's in the different cylinders. Not sure where you are located but it's still winter up here in Manitoba so I wont be doing that for awhile. Everyone here in the British Car Club of Manitoba with TR3's and TR4's still seem to be running the Champion the L87YC's ? Last time I ran Champions I had issues with them carbon fouling but that might have been from the carbs running too rich.
Like you say it's better to check the plugs mid run because at idle they carbon foul.(y)

I worked in a Yamaha shop in the mid 70s. NGKs, with the proper heat range were the only plugs that could keep the pre-mix bikes running cleanly. They are extremely accurate with their heat range. A 7 would foul, 6 would run perfectly, and a 5 would put a nice hole in the top of the piston. The Yamahas would not run at all on Champion plugs. The heat range was not accurate enough to choose the correct plug. That said, I went on to work in several auto dealerships. I learned that the various makes would always run best with the plugs the factory used to develop the engines. Chrysler ran best on Champion, Volvo on Bosch, etc. However, in 50 years of experience, I found NGK to be one of the best plugs out there, if not the best.

Hi Karl59tr,

I tried to find the NGK BPR5HIX but they don't make them! NGK stops at the -6. I might try to find something based on the Champ L87Yc. Bosch does not seem to have a plug in that range either.

I am located northeast of Baltimore, Maryland. As a kid, I lived in Syracuse NY, so I understand snow!
