Good morning folks.

Is there anyone near Duncan BC (on Rt 1 north of Victoria BC) who would be willing to take a look at a car for me?

Tom, if that price is Canadian, you need to get on a plane!
heck, after looking at all the photos, it doesn't matter if it's US$'s.....that's the car for you - straight shift & all!

Tony - that price converts to around $4700 US. Definitely worth paying if the car is solid ... but I can't get any response from the seller (Church Motors). Email results in "call us"; telephone results in leaving messages and then no call-backs. They must be related to that guy you found last month, who was selling the line of MBs out under the trees.

I'd feel better about paying $1000+ for a plane ticket if I knew the car wasn't a bondo queen with dodgy frame, drivetrain and body. The seller's description is very positive ... but it's been on the market for many months and there's no info on the engine, suspension, etc.

Mercedes update:

A mechanic made an appointment to go see the car to do a hands-on check. Found what appear to be some newly-painted areas (still with orange peel) with rusty bubbles underneath (see attached). Also found that most of the car seems to have the original paint.

Interior in very good condition, but couldn't lift the carpets to check the footwells for any signs of rust.

A few dings and rust areas on the bumpers and other chrome bits.

Engine area relatively clean and "original" looking, with a few new parts.

Undercarriage shows a damp spot (see attached).

Interesting that the keys "weren't available" ... so the engine couldn't be checked and no driving could be done. Interesting.

For a road test by the mechanic, I'm hoping the seller can find the keys. Jeez Lou-eez!

Update to the update:

Just learned that the oily mess indicates a leaking front pinion seal; not a major problem in itself. BUT to properly repair it, there are several other big steps needed (aren't there always ...). If those steps aren't followed, you need much more expensive work done within a few hundred miles.

The repair job would run between $3K and $4K by a mechanic who knows what he's doing.

I think that, plus the recently painted rusty spots, and the problems dealing with the seller, are turning me away.

Onward through the fog!

That looks like one of them oddball swing axle, with the horizontal spring.

I had a 219 for a while (out of an abandoned storage facility), 6-cylinder, 4 on the tree, Hydrax (no clutch) shift.

You couldn't keep rear tyres on the bugger.
The way that rear end worked, scrubbed the tread off in 6 months.

We got it cleaned up, painted, sold it in a year (needing another set of rear tyres).

If that's the axle I think it is, the pumpkin and RH tube are one part, and the LH tube u-joints at the LH side of the pumpkin.

I think, Tom, to get one of the quality you need for your trip, you may have to raise your price range a bit & look at cars that have recently gone through a major restoration.
