Another Paint thread

Barry,

Did you buy the Regular Rustoleum( Not the professional), and mineral spirits I imagine.

As Drew said, we're all waiting to hear about it. Keep good notes!!

Good luck.

Yes, the stuff on this page:
Outdoor Metal and 100% mineral spirits. About a 70/30 or 60/40 mix.
I've done 1 coat, and it looks suprizingly good, better than the original paintwork that has no gloss at all.
The wife came home and saw me with roller in hand.....
"What are you doing?"
"Painting me car."
"You can't paint it like that!"
"Yeah I can, I read it on the internet!"

Anyhow, it's getting cold and I don't want my hands to be shaking. I'll put coat #2 on tomorrow morning, and then run a wetsand in the afternoon.
I'm only doing 1 fender for right now, until I can see some progress one way or another.

How cold is it getting? Paint drying time is very temp. sensitive!! Keep a watch on that! You may need extra drying time if is drops too far!

35* but the sun has gone down, it was 40* when I quit.
Another reason why I'm waiting for the morning for another round.
This is going to take a while.

This is getting very interesting. I want to see how it works out. I painted the engine bay, underneath, etc with rustoleum. I did not use a roller as I was not too concerned about it. It has some runs, etc, but its good paint and easy to come by. I know sooner or later I will be back inside the engine and the bay will get some scratches, easy touchup with rustoleum. I must also say that any rust I wire wheeled down and applied por-15 and then top coated with rustolem. That por-15 is the hardest stuff to sand down that I have ever seen. I coated some rusty spots on the inside of a fender and it ran to the outside in a spot and I ended up using the 4" grinder to get it off.

uh, could someone remind me why we r rolling instead of spray cans? u can get alot of cans for $50! ......z

OK, now I'm thinking back many years. When I was a kid my dad worked for a place that put tanks on fuel trucks and painted them. They would give away extra paint that was leftover from a job because they always started with new paint on a job like that. Anyways my dad had all kinds of partial gallons of paint and when we painted my first car (huge old 65 Dodge Polara) we mixed some red, orange and brown together to have enough to paint the car. The car came out well (sprayed). Anyway, I remember using some green paint like this straight out of a can on a lawnmower with a brush and it came out really well, it was one thick coat and levelled out before it dried. I have not thought about that in years. I bet it does not have to be rustoleum, but could be regular car paint that was not thinned and was allowed to dry slowly.

Kim, that's what I am wondering. I don't know when I'll get to it, but I sprayed my car a few years back, and I have a little paint left over. I have a spare door. I'll try and sand it down, and roll some standard auto paint on it. Like I said, not sure when it'll happen, I have too much now between work, MBA, and other misc projects /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I just LOVE how all these paint Co.s include the swatch for clear, the one for Tremclad above has THREE!! ...Yeah guys, that looks really just like what I need!!! hehehe /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

I'll agree with the no runs, no drips, but the errors? Although due to the human in charge, I did make a couple of errors. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif
ATM I've just found out that it costs $$'s to re-title my car for a different colour....I'm not sure I like the colour I selected because it looks like glossy primer, so I will be trying their 'Gloss Royal Blue' which would require less coats and should shine up easier.
So....

The colour on the tin or website, may not be that close to what you want.
There are NO drips, runs or orange peel, even before wetsanding.
Check State laws regarding vehichle colour changes.

Bear in mind I'm not finished, but preliminary results do tend to lean toward the 'myth confirmed' category. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

Barry,
You sure don't waste any time. Glad to hear that things look good so far.

You have to change the title if you repaint the car??? I'm pretty sure there's no color on our UT titles. How odd...

Thanks again for the testing, Barry. We're all waiting on some pictures. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Let me re-phrase that....
The registration document has to be changed, forms filled out with DMV etc (gov't + forms = $), just so their computers know what car the police are talking about.
I have to go back to the Hardware Store AGAIN but sometime during the day today, I should have some pictures of something by afternoon. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Ah, that makes a bit more sense. There's always a fee involved with anything the government will do.

Quick update.....
This is what 1 coat looks like, without wetsanding.....
Please see if you can guess which half is done, and what colour shirt I'm wearing...

This is going to look great!!!!!

What color are you painting the other half? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif Matching the shirt? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Would that be the shiny side (and a red shirt)?

I really hope this does work. Someday I'll need to repaint Tunebug when I get to the bits of bodywork it needs, and won't have much budget to do it. Hmmmm

You know, even using the "good" paints (automotive) the cost is not that great if you are doing all the work yourself!! The mega-buck jobs are 90% labor costs and 10% materials!
