Another EBay Oversell job.....

Hey Rich - its Steve in Texas with the Spider. We've emailed several times before. I just joined the board and saw your post and thought I'd hollar at ya. My Spider's running awesome right now except for the high idle (who'd have thought?) which I've traced down to the FASD as being the culprit. Am lookng at options other than going with a manual choke conversion as I've heard complaints from other people who have done it - including that it didn't fix the high idle. They probablyy had other issues as well, tho. anyways, just wanted to hollar at ya - I got anew computer and lost all my email addresses out of the old one - email me if you get a chance...
Steve

Re: Ebay Overseller Replies

My favorite line on rare cars:

"It's a rare car, 35 were made...121 survive today." -- Jay Leno.

Yes, every car is now a SS396 or a 427...or a Hemi etc.. I've become really good about spotting recreations. The sad thing is when people swear in and out that they have a factory original, like the guy who has his '69 Z-28 down at my friends' shop. It has a data plate for a Z28, a DZ302 engine matching the VIN etc...but with it on the rack, we found the car was originally an automatic (had a bracket for a column shift automatic,) and a jagged box cutout had been fairly shoddily torched out to accomodate the floor shifter. But the owner still claimed his was a factory original!

Funny thing is that I'm always up front about my cars, because I think it gives them character: my TR3 is made from at least two, probably three other TR3s. My '69 Corvette has a built 454, instead of the original solid lifter 427/435hp engine. They are what they are...I enjoy driving them.

Hey, Sammy -

Y'all didn't have an earthquake out there that we didn't hear about, did you? Looks like your cars have been shuffled around.

And... Reproducing too.

I said it before " everything" is RARE on eBay. Or "it has a nice patina". Or "I am selling for a friend whose father just died" - again! Or a friend who does not have a computer.

Steve...Welcome to the board. I think you'll find this a great place to discuss and learn about these cars. Great bunch of folks here.

Same lineup I've had for a year. I just never got a picture that included the white Corvette. Since that '89 Corvette is still immobile, and the TR7 was immobile until this last week, it was impossible to take a good picture.

Based on the last Barrett-Jackson Scttsdale auction, we should all get into the rare car business.

$15,000 Hemi Crate Motor
$15,000 Complete Resto of some Charger with a 318 (sans 318)
=
$90,000 Car for some rich oil executive sucker.

The only thing I consider rare nowadays is my steak. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The absolute worst scam scum on ebay sold a clone GTO to a client and the client, sadly, had the car appraised after purchase. Gussied up LeMans. The ebay/seller story line "Our son was killed in Iraq and we need to sell his car, everytime we see it it reminds us of him".

Isn't the GTO really just a gussied-up Tempest LeMans? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif (Just kidding.)

That is horrible...I believe fully in Car-ma, or what comes around goes around in dealing with cars. These people will one day get what they deserve.

Well, I feel much better now. The seller finally came clean with the listing:

On Apr-10-05 at 19:04:41 PDT, seller added the following information:

With some research I found out this is one of 1421 made with U.S. specs.and there are very few still around. This car was kept outside not under cover for some time and has rust on the fire wall as well as some on the exterior but all in all it has a sturdy body. It has the blue interior faded. The lighting system needs some work dash lights work but door and trunk not working probably just bulbs. I have done some restoration ie new top new tires new stereo (could not find an original), new carpet. And some body work about 30 hours worth in front wheel wells. It may have been painted I cannot tell There is some work that needs to be done with this car I just do not have the time and the attention it needs and hope I find someone that will TLC it and keep me appraised of its condition. Engine runs great Fuel injected. With new starter. I recieved this car with the original tires so I am sure the the mileage is correct but the Title has NO for not original miles . It was appraised by a dealer from Tallahassee Florida At $12,500. Have Documentation. Below is the VIN explained and a note from the WEB. I took a picture of the engine but it would not show it when I hooked it up to my computer.

Now that he actually describes the car (including the 4 letter word -- rust) I'll be interested to see if he gets any more bids. Wonder if the one bidder out there retracts theirs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif At least someone won't be buying it as 1 of only 9 made.

I emailed him twice indicating that Florida state automobile sales laws and Federal trade laws make it illegal to provide misleading or withold important information. Reminded that a seller would have recourse (ie damages) if the car was misrepresented.

The guy is a snake, and a dumb one, at that.

Ah boo hoo, the guys not gonna be able to rip someone off now. There are alot of guys on ebay like that. I've bought two cars off of ebay and neither have been what they claimed. My rust free Opel GT had more cancer than ten smokers lungs put together, and my 90% restored MkII Spitfire turns out to have just had a paint job, and and new carpet. Though on that one I kinda knew the car wasn't as good as the guy claimed. Ebay really is a buyer beware place. Its just good that there are some people willing to intervene when they see something so blatantly incorrect.

using his vin decoding method i have car number 3 out of nine. and mine was all original (stored in a heated barn for over 15 years) with 19k miles and previous owner spent almost $2k to bring the car up to snuff (new top,new injectors, flush fuel tank and hydraulics, etc). I paid $3500 from a private party.

It is always a good thing to find somebody (like from this list) who will, if the car is not nearby, take a look at it for you.

I Haven't decided if ebay is a blessing or a curse. As a gun collector I seem many fine guns being broken up for parts because of Ebays rules. Most of the guns I collect have serial numbers on most major parts so if the gun is broken up then the value goes way down. On the other hand they are on of the best places to find such parts and pieces you can't find anywhere else.

Ebay is a gun collectors nightmare, and blessing. I hate to see nice guns parted out, but at the same time I am finally able to get a new cylinder for a Colt .45 1917 Army which has been virtually impossible to find through other means.

Well, some people just don't get it....

My "favorite" seller just relisted his rare 1981 TR7 with only 12,000 miles. Guess he just needed some more embarrassment.

Another bogus listing

First, no shots of the engine compartment. The interior shots show a really raggety floor and driver's seat for only having 12,000 miles. Claims he believes the 12,000 miles because it had the "original" tires. How does he know that? And if true, I certainly wouldn't trust 24 year old tires. Plus the last shot is one of those "funnies"...not even a TR7 interior. As Bugs Bunny would say..."What a maroon." Hope nobody bids on this one...again.

Re: Well, some people just don't get it....

Well, it won't sell...again.

Luckily, he gets hit for $40 everytime he lists it.
