another adjustable steering column question

I've been trying to get my steering wheel to straight ahead rather than five degrees off. It's the adjustable type column and I've pulled the traficator head out till it's just out of the lower stator tube. Now I can't get it back in. I know it only fits in one way because of the dimples on the short tube but I can't seem to find a way to get it back together. Anyone suggest why?

Yeah it was easy using the instructions at https://www.acmefluid.com.au/larry/trafficator.html

Took less than two hours including the fiddle to get the short stator tube back in.
I'm now tempted to dissasemble the traficator which works fine but doesn't self cancel always. Acording to the site above it is usually just in need of a clean.

Ian, I looked through, but I'm not sure I see where it says how to get the wheel lined up straight. My traficator is fine. I'm just off tothe left about five degrees. Too little to remove the steering wheel off the the adapter.

#1. Make sure the steering wheel is in the straight forward position. Mine was about 90 deg off, so I parked the car in the garage with it in that position.

#2. Shut the car off, turn the battery isolation switch off.

#3. Assuming you have the adjustable wheel, loosen the three setscrews to allow you to pull the tafficator out so you can access the circlip that holds the wheel on the splines. This is at the bottom of the article about "<span style="font-weight: bold">Roger Moment’s tips for installing a new steering wheel or repairing the trafficator without removing the wiring</span>."

#4. Making sure the wheel is still in the straight-ahead position, loosen the adjustment collar and pull the wheel off the splines. Rotate the wheel to where it belongs and push back onto the splines. Replace the circlip.

#5. Reinstall the trafficator. This is where it may take several tries and some patience to get it to slide into the groove in the fixed stator tube. When it's back in, tighten the three setscrews to hold it in place.

#6. Adjust the wheel in/out until it's where you want it and tighten the adjustment collar.

#7. Drive.
