Pearl Harbor Attack.jpg

Eighty-three years ago! According to an online article today, there are only 16 Pearl Harbor survivors left. Some 87,000 military members were on active duty that day in Pearl! The last USS Arizona survivor died earlier in April, this year.

The only known live radio report on the attack, on a telephone hookup from station KGU in Hawaii, to NBC radio in NYC.

Interesting to me that the headline says they also attacked Manila that day. That seems to have been lost in the story.

We visited the Arizona, but it was hard to really let it sink in,
as there was a boatload of Japanese tourists there at the same
time. It's not that they were Japanese, but it's hard to get the true
grasp of what happened with a room full of people.I think it would
be best to be there by yourself.
My friend Rob told me that his Dad was stationed there at
Pearl Harbor when the attack happened. He was in Dress Whites,
so many went & soaked them in coffee,so that they didn't stand out.
His Dad kept his coffee soaked uniform,& Rob donated it to the
museum at the Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor, where Rob was stationed
in the '70's.

I was only 3 years old at the time, but as I grew up, the story got quite intense at times when a group of men got on the subject. It was a dark period in our history how American citizens here at home of oriental descent were treated by being gathered up and put in fenced-in camps for the duration of the war. It's understandable, but still a dark period.:(

You can see some closeup of the Arizona remains in the beginning of the movie Big Jim McLain. They did a scene during flag raising before the memorial was built.

We spent a couple of days in Honolulu 13 years ago on our way to Guam to see our first great grandchild. Went to several of the WW II memorials. very moving experience to someone who grew uw watching the War in Europe and Wat in Pacific TV series. Jean's father was a Army medic wounded on one of the island invasions towards the end of the war. He never talked much about it at all.

In this morning's paper. US Navy Seaman 2nd Class John Auld, finally laid to rest near his brother, Edwin and his mother, Lillian. He was one of 429 killed on the Oklahoma. All crew members of that ship have now been accounted for.

Saw this elsewhere...USS Oklahoma...torpedoed December 7th 1941...32 survivors...429 casualties...refloated to be scrapped...sunk while being towed.

All that remains of Oklahoma is one barrel housed at the Muskogee War Memorial.

The Oklahoma's wheel is at the Kirkpatrick center here in OKC. It was retrieved and given to Admiral Kirkpatrick.

As we mention the Pearl Harbor attack remains, don't forget the USS Utah still lies on the other side of Ford Island where it was sunk.
Other battleships were almost certainly saved because the Japanese mistook the Utah as a part of the Pacific fleet instead of a training ship.

Thank you for reminding me, I had completely forgotten about the wheel being up there, along with one of Oklahoma's flags if I recall right. The worst part of me forgetting the wheel is that I know I have a photo of me with it somewhere.
