Anatomy of a Harley muffler

And I discovered one time that there is a MA Stolen Plate reported that is exactly the same BUGSY 01 assigned to a VW Rabbit. It was interesting trying to make the local Barney Fife understand this is an OH plate not a MA Plate. That was a 5 minute conversation a couple of years back. I got pulled over and Barney thought he had a "hot one"!

Billy, I am not running one now. But I probably will be some day.

Should be an easy find in your part. You won't regret it.

Dumb question: I've got a couple of H-D mufflers (case of beer to the shop that gave them to me for free; an owner had upgraded to more noise...)but they're pretty bulky. I tried lying under the BE a year or so back, and couldn't figure out how to install them, as they were too long to go behind the axle and too bulky to install under the axle.
I'll try to get some pictures this week, and also try to figure out how to attach the photos!
Thanks,
Doug

You probly have the dresser muffler. I believe JP is runnin' one'na those.

I got pulled over as Barney Fife had typed Bugsy 01 into his computer. It came back a hit for MA plates as stolen.

That's not what I've got - mine was no problem to fit behind the axle.

That's what I figured. AH had no probable cause... I saw one do that to me when driving a 50 Merc. I can't remeber if I got pulled over or not. I think I id and was questioned why my LA antique tag didn't have a year sticker.

That would be......because it doesn't expire...

Is this one I would want for a Sprite?

No, that's off of a big bike (dresser or FLHT IIRC) You want the Dyna/FX/Softail, maybe a sportster type too.

No, that looks aftermarket or like straight pipes.

This one here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/95-96-OEM-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2325b8093a&vxp=mtr

The trick is you need to get one with the baffles still in and non-catalyst. 90's you'll be fine on catalyst. I think '02 and up had cats but can't be sure. Either way make sure it still has the baffles in as guys gut them sometimes.

If you want, send it to me and I'll do the baffle mod for free. You won't believe how quite a straight through muffler can be. H-D did a great job designing the inside of the case. Just knocking the center plug out gives you a great sport muffler without a lot of noise and the baffle mod will make it quiet enough for the most noise conscience motorist.

I'm tellin' you guys, you'll never believe it's a straight-through muffler. I'll even do the inlet mod for you too so you don't need adapters. (just pay for the extra piece of pipe I'll need)

Check with Northshore Harley Davidson in Slidell if they have any take-offs so you don't have to ship it to me. This offer extends to anyone else who may want to try it. All you gotta do is get a muller to me or source one close by. I don't mind doing it for one or two if it'll help someone out.

Not that I would use.You weant the one that is bullet shaped as in the E-Bay Add. I tried one shapoed like that and Bugsy sounded like a Rice Rocket / big Fart sound as you revved. Not a good sound.

Jim, which one did you try, the long one or the straight pipe looking one?

The one I tried was a long straight pipe, no taper at the end, approx 4" OD with a diagonal sliced end of the pipe. It absolutely sounded like a big fart when you touched the right pedal and gave it some revs. Instead of progressively getting louder it went from a little rumble to an extremely loud, not a little but EXTREMELY LOUD obnoxious noise. I took it off of the car immediatey. The one listed on E-Bay https://www.ebay.com/itm/95-96-OEM-HA...b8093a&vxp=mtr is the one I used. Center baffle is punched out but it makes a really nice noise as is. Now my wife thinks it's way too loud, I can't start the car on Saturday morning and sneak out for coffee with Bugsy without waking her up. I might be interested in your trick to quiet things down a little more. Come to think of it maybe I need to grab that muffler on E-Bay right now and replace the one on Bugsy. It could mean more drive time on the weekends.

If you have a welding machine at the house you can do the baffle mod with it still on the car. What's your timing set at?

Kelly,

No clue on timing but Bugsy starts almost too quickly before the oil gets a chance to circulate. I think I'm pretty much right on. Plenty of power out of my 1098. Right now it sounds easier to replace rather than drill the muffler apart. I'm happy with the sound, just want to be able to get it out of the garage and not wake up the wife. Unhappy wife with not enough sleep = crappy weekend.
