Aluminum vs Original Valve cover

This topic mimics another discussion of valve covers dealing with excessive use of oil with these al. valve cover over the stock ones, especially when used with a triple carbed set up. I'm curios, What causes this excessive oil consumption?

Its because the aluminum covers are not baffled on the ventilation port. The consumption is even worse with the external oil line (more oil around the valvetrain).

It never seemed to be a problem for me with the stock compression ratio and twin carbs. Even with the external oil feed. Added the third carb and incresed the compression and the carbs were sucking oil straight from the valve cover.

Richard Good also sells an oil seperator kit that re-directs the oil drawn out of the valve cover back to the sump and only vapors back to the carbs. I just put the stock cover back on for now and it solved my oil consumption problem.

How does the # of carbs effect the consumption with the same al. cover? Some people have had issues when they go from a 2 to a 3 carb using those al one.

I think most people that install triple carbs also increase compression. To narrow it to carbs or compression we would have to narrow the variables. Those being # of carbs, compression ratio, external feed line etc...

Like I said before, the only variables that changed for me were # of carbs and compression. The others were constant between my stock and performance engine. Not sure if it was one over the other or a combintion of the two.

Is there any way to put a baffle in the Aluminum cover? Or is it more complicated than that, thus the option offered by Good Parts?

Telly,

When I was hunting for a way around this, I stopped at B&B Speed Shop in Branford, CT. Even though I wasn't driving Detroit iron, the guys there were very helpful and courteous, unlike the clowns in RI, but that's another story. In any event, one of the guys mentioned that either Mr. Gasket or Moroso made a baffle kit to install inside of the aluminum covers. I had forgotten about that conversation up until now.

I think that may bear further investigation, unless it would require welding it to the cover or if there would be clearance issues between the valves and the baffle.

Ok Paul I think I stopped the leak...lol

I know that "leak control device" has a specific part number at Moss or TRF. Do you happen to have it handy?
