Aluminum bonnet?

I think the bonnet on my new MGB may be one of the earlier aluminum ones. It has the prop rod on the RH side (as viewed from the back of the car) instead of the locking/telescopic one one on the other side that it's supposed to have. A magnet doesn't stick to the bonnet anywhere. Any other clues I should look for?

If you can lift it with one hand and it pretty much flies up, it's aluminum.

I think you answered your question with the magnet test.

Yup.Unobtanium. :jester:

Well, that's a neat discovery.

One question -- right now the bonnet prop is the older rod style, but there is no corresponding socket on the body for that rod to hook into when the hood is open. Is that a piece I can add?

It was a welded on piece originally. I'd say a couple 3/16" dia. pop-rivets and some panel bond adhesive would serve to attach an appropriate surrogate.

Hang around an' I'll take a photo of one.

That is indeed the little bit I'm looking for. I'll need to add that to my list.

And so it starts....

For the most part I'm *very* pleased with the condition of this car. Very little to do, really, other than drive it. Which is good, as I spent most of my available money buying it.

Two big drill bits, a jigsaw and a 3" square piece of 16 gauge mild steel. Twenty minutes' time to fab it up.

Just a thought.
Do you have a micrometer?
Can you tell how thick the bonnet skin is?

There were aftermarket fiberglas units.

An Aluminum Bonnet.
Dang that's got to be uncomfortable

I'll get some pictures and measurements tomorrow...

Kinda easy to differentiate twixt alloy and frozen snott. :jester:

I've got an aluminum bonnet for a B but it's been slightly racked (skewed). I'll let it go for $40 if someone wants to give a try at straightening it.

Bonnet photos.

Alloy, Drew.

Musta taken a shot to th' front as those two holes on the underside ain't "standard". Likely access to straighten out some dimpled place. Lots of them got pushed on hard enuff to deform by some ham-fisted oil change monkey or other non-caring type.
