TR4/4A Alternator Converstion for a TR4

2) I kept my mechanical fan because I hate the sound of the electric fan. It's a 12" same as everyone sells with the black and blue wires. And its loud and sounds like an F150.
FWIW, I used a 16" Hayden. I could hear the noise if I listened for it, but generally it was unobtrusive. I ran with only a manual switch for many years, and kept forgetting to turn it off

Fans do vary, but as I recall, Hayden does not recommend their 12" as sole cooling fan for a 2.2 liter motor. Perhaps moving less air for their diameter is the reason they aren't as loud?

Also, IMO a properly sized fan shouldn't run very much. In reasonable ambient temps (ie less than 100F), I only needed mine in stop-n-go traffic, or the first stop after getting off the freeway.

It seems to develop a visible vibration in the alternator around 2.5krpm.[/QUOTE]My problems weren't so severe, but there was a visible vibration at certain engine rpm. I fixed the problem by adding a spacer between the original generator mounts, and a long bolt to run through the alternator and both mounts. Also had to drill the rear mount to accomodate the bolt (which was only Grade 3 but large enough to fill the hole in the alternator). Eliminated both the visible vibration and the problems I was having with bolts backing off.

Re: Alternator Conversion for a TR4

I would buy a used alternator and have it rebuilt locally. I do not trust the quality of the reman or rebuilt units from the parts houses. I get the idea they are rebuilt by someone in the third world on a dirt floor. After the second failure of parts house sourced units in two years, I had mine redone by a local small starter alternator shop. Since I tend to keep vehicles a long time I am familiar with his work.
