Alfa Question...

Offline
How important is the sock filter on my in-tank priming fuel pump? Will it hurt anything if I leave it off?
1984 Alfa Spider 2.0L with Bosch L-Jet injection.

There is also an inline filter just after the main fuel pump.

Also, I just went to pick up my new fuel pump... I'm a little unhappy that it's not exactly like the original bosch unit, but maybe it'll hold up well (the bosch is about $60 or so more). It's made by Master, and is an inline with 125psi max output. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about Master components?

I also ordered a new in-tank pump also. ($35) I pulled the old one out and it doesn't run. I wonder if it could have caused some of my fuel starving? I think all it does is prime the main pump. Anyway, when I get all this in, I should have eliminated any of my fuel delivery problems.

The "lift pump" in the tank can indeed cause some grief, especially on startup, and if the main pump is less-than up to snuff. The li'l "sock" filter *may* be available as a seperate piece thru NAPA... I seem to recall getting one for a BMW from 'em some time back. It wouldn't be critical to have but if you are gonna keep the car, it'd be better to have it than not. Over time the lift pump will ingest "junk" and the impeller gets "craminated".

"craminated" another new word by the Doc. Nice one too.

Where did you find the in tank pump for $35. What's the make and part number? My Spider runs great without that pump working but I would like to get one in there. Did your "sock" come off in the fuel tank and is it still there? I have Spica F/I.

The socks usually disintegrate over time and the pump ingests the pieces. It's the same pump BMW, Volvo and a bunch of others with Bosch fuel systems used. "In-tank lift pump" IIRC. Try the local "chain" parts stores, they likely all have a listing for it. Alfa's SPICA systems used the same one. It really only works to feed the main pump after the car's been off for a while and the line from tank to main pump has drained down... cold weather climes seem to need it more than "we" do.

I got mine at Advance. It's made by Master, and is almost an exact copy of the original one. The "sock" filter was still attached to mine when I pulled it out, but the sewn seam split open when I handled it. Advance does not carry the "sock", but I'm gonna look a few other places before the sending unit/lift pump goes back in.
