Alfa 4cyl engines

Why are they mounted at about an 8 degree angle? The twin cam head is wide so I can't see it offers a lower hood. Oil pickup maybe? Restoring my old sports/racer with alfa 1600, the engine would fit better upright. It has a conventional steel sump, not the batwing. Also thinking of replacing the Alfa with a 1275, it would be more appropriate, since the front and rear suspensions, wheels are very early 50's Cooper. But the Alfa is light and put out good power.

You should try asking Doc, he's our local Alfaista.

I was hoping he would see the post. I posted on the AlfaBB as suggested. Seems the only reason the engine is tilted is so the Webers clear the inner fender.

That sounds like something Alfa would do.

Most Euro cars, Jag, Ferrari, Alpha have done this for low hood (bonnet) for aerodynamics.

Sorry I'm late, Mark.

Only explanation I ever heard was to accommodate the Webers. The '60's~'70's models I'm most familiar with used a "giubo" flex-joint at the trans output shaft and U-joints at the rear and middle, with a support bearing and slip-joint at the center. Always thought that giubo was a method to compensate for the canted engine. More compliant than a four-point U-J, less likely to wear as a result.

That 1600 should put out much better power than a 1275! And certainly a more elegant piece of kit, as well.

I love my iron block Brit engines but where twin-cam designs are concerned, Alfa takes the prize. I've personally owned 1300, 1600, 1750 and 2L Alfas, professionally worked on all at a dealership. The best for output vs. size and weight are the 1750's, IMHO.

I did not find that discussion when I searched the alfabb so I started one. https://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/en...rebuilding/673832-alfa-1600-engine-angle.html I received a different set of answers and a discussion about Webers. I am not buying the leveling during torque argument. Alfa engines seem to tilt 5 to 8 degrees, that is a lot of torque movement to bring to level, more than broken motor mounts. The oiling issue was not brought up in my thread. And yes nothing looks better in a sports/racer then a twin cam.
