MGB Advice - Remove the seats

For veterans this is probably a no brainer, so this is advice for those just starting out, but removing the seats makes any work on the dash INFINITELY easier! I had toiled and nearly broke my back trying to do some work under the dash with the seats in. After taking the seats out I was able to remove the entire dash in about an hour. You can actually stretch out on your back and get access to everything under there! It took about 30 minutes to remove both seats. Just push the seat fully back, remove two bolts, push the seat fully forward and remove two bolts. Piece of cake and I wish I had just done this first thing! In the future I would not hesitate to remove the seats (seat) if I had to change a light bulb in the dash.

Yes, absolutely. Too often the lessons best learned are those we discover for ourselves! But resources like this forum, where experience and knowledge are shared, aren't too shabby, either!

Mickey I have learned a lot on here and have met great people and have been referred to contacts of theirs, so the network grows! There is no substitute for gathering with people who know and have been there!

Don't feel bad, we've all been there! Took me two weeks to finally figure out how much easier it is to work under the dash with the seats out! And if you put a pillow under there, it's easy to doze off if you get tired or frustrated. Not saying any of us ever got frustrated working under the dash of a MGB. :highly_amused:

Last night took out the windscreen in 10 minutes. I cannot imagine working on the windscreen with the dash still in! With the experience of doing it at least once before everything on this car would be easier! Will see how hard it is to put the windscreen back, but at least I know the sequence.. remove seats, remove the dash, work on all the bits, put the windscreen back on, put the dash on, then put the bits back on... takes longer but so much more enjoyable.

Wise words, grasshopper...

I found this very true with my Bugeyes -- the first one I worked on a few years ago was all new to me. As I tackle my new one I'm remembering all the little tricks and tips from the first go-around.

So you just need to finish this car, sell it, and buy a second one. Good to go!

Oh no don't egg me on! (to be truthful the thought has already crept into the depth of my mind, trying to keep it pushed well down!!)

We would never do that.

Thank you so much for the idea of removing the seats first. I am just getting ready to remove my dash on my 1963 MGB for the second time (last time was 10 years ago) to repaint. This will make it soooooo much easier. I do remember how frustrated i got the first time. Thanks again.
