A Ride Gone Bad

I decided to take the Midget out for a little jaunt this morning while Basil was doing the upgrades. After about 50 miles, the engine went flat. It doesn't pull like it should. I'm hoping it's just a fouled plug, but if it's deeper than that, I guess I'll schedule an engine change for tomorrow. The engine I want to put in isn't ready yet, so I'll have to go with plan B, and drop in another stocker. Hopefully, I'll just have a bad plug. I'll check it out later today. Temp and pressure looked good, and no unusual noises, so maybe I'll get lucky.
Jeff

LOL, there's something amusing about your relaxed tone when it comes to swapping an engine. Even funnier is your number of spare engines!

Anyway, hopefully it's only a fouled plug!

Ahh, Jeff, was that when the car went inverted?

Change one Spark Plug 5 min engine swap 250 min.

Spare Engine - Priceless

Sorry, the relaxed tone was just great! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif

yep when Miss Agatha is up and running that's going to be my next trick. 1297 and ribcase. 1297 warmed over or course.

I use to keep one built to swap out every 5 years or so. Was never a big deal, an easy sat job with the kids. Guess I tend to wind em kind of tight. Every drive to work and back was a "Mitty" race through the back country roads. Some times would even find a late model friend to show how it was done. Seems a stage II+ 948 can handle a 1297 especialy with a good suspension. I of cours don't want to comment on the drivers skills.

Life is indeed priceless, mostly good times. Wonder if Miss Agatha knows what she is in for.

Well, just two fouled plugs. #1 and #2 were black and fluffy. Found high resistance on those two plug wires, and traced it to some schmutz on the distributor posts. Put a new set of plugs in it, and cleaned the cap. Pulls to 6500 in 1st and 2nd, ran it to 6250 in third. Then I had to back down lest the local constabulary take notice.
Don't you folks have spare engines lying around? I've even got a spare engine and trans for my 740 Turbo Volvo! I think the only thing I don't have a spare for is the Fiat.
A couple of years ago, a fellow forum member stopped over to see if I had a 1275 he could borrow while he rebuilt the 948 in his '62. When he left, he was driving a 1275 Sprite, rather than the 948 he came with. I even had a spare 1275 stainless exhaust we tossed on .
Now I can finish the 1275 that is planned for the '72. .040 over, flat top pistons, fully ported head, 11:1 compression, reworked HS4's,lightened crank and rods, big cam, roller rockers, aluminum flywheel..............
All that is left is to finish polishing the valves, and install the head.
Building engines to me is relaxation therapy.
Jack, when I was stationed at Davis-Monthan, a friend had a Porsche 912. I had to build a killer 948 for one of the Bugeyes just to knock him down a peg! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Jeff - I have spare transmissions, axle shafts, driveshafts, etc for the jeep, but I haven't quite got started on engine collection yet. Guess I'm missing out!

Rob, you really need to catch up! I think I have currently in the garage, 3 948's, 2 1098's, and 2 1275's. In the storage facility, there's at least another 2 1098's, a running 1275, one more 948, and the spare engine and trans for the GT6. In California, I have a bunch more, including a brand new A+ engine for one of the Bugeye projects. That one will probably wind up as a 1380. 120+ HP in a Bugeye. Wheeee!
Jeff

Speaking of engines. I have a question. When I was rebuilding mine the book showed and oli slinger ring on the crankshaft inside the timing chain case. Mine did not have this slinger on it and I did nto put one back. How bad is this?

Well, the slinger performs two functions. One is that it slings the oil onto the chain and gears, the other is that it keeps the majority of the oil away from the oil seal, to reduce leakage.
I think I'd blow the 3 bucks on a slinger, and take the time to install it. Dished side to the front.

[/ QUOTE ]Well, its already back together and in the car, so I think I will chance it then. If everything else works out ok, I might be putting in a different cam in the future anyways.

That's a truth over here as well. I can get lost pretty quickly in the process.

Weeeee does not begine to cover the chill that went down my spine at that comment. That's three times the HP of a stock Bugeye, Just think about that, that's like a 700 HP mustang.

Sister getting married in Dec in Detroit, then on to Jeffs for a few days and see his mess and play with his toys. LOL

Not likely but gesh, 130 HP.
