Bill,

The 944 suffers from only a few specific problems. The gearbox can have trouble holding third gear, the sunroof latches break, the interior is somewhat prone to cracks and rips, and the rear hatch is very leak-prone.

The LCD clock almost never works either and they are a fortune to replace.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the non turbo S/S2 models.

Mention Non Turbo, Turbo, S and Se hehehe

I Bail, writers, have too much hands on experience I am naive to this tread!

One *really* good thing about the 944 (and the 951) is that it is galvanized . These things are far more rust-proof than most other cars.

How'd they paint em? & I've seen a few with MGB-type rust.

[/ QUOTE ]

early 924s were not galvanized - might be what you've seen.

No, I know the difference between 944 & 924 bodies....though I do think the 944 in Prosche Guards Red is one of the prettier cars they produced.

GB1,
As Bret said, take a look at my sig pic. Yes, I owned an '84, and it was a very good, solid car.

I've had a bunch of friends with 928s, and yes, two had some electrical sensors go out along the way. One (the test car in my story,) was extremely reliable.

My father had two law partners that bought 924s new. They were reliable compared to the Audi 5000 my father bought -- just too underpowered.

The 924 Turbos are decent cars, but tend to be abused. I've had chances to buy at least two well-running, solid examples for under $1000. There's just no market for those cars!

924s will never appreciate. 944s will eventually come up in value -- especially the Turbos.

The thing with these cars is that parts are expensive when you have to replace something, but the other side of the coin is that the parts break less frequently than other cars, because they are of higher quality. Most cars that inspire lust have achilles heels, and the Porsches are no exception. I have lusted after an S2 944 myself, and still might be tempted.

I suppose I spend too much time seeing the cost of parts on modern cars. For instance, the little plastic turn-signal bulb receptical on my wife's '98 Olds Intrigue (literally a bulb socket that plugs between the wires and the bulb) was $25. The keyless entry fob on my Avalon was $150.

A clutch master cylinder for the 944 was $85. Starter was $90. Very reasonable.
