A Healey with Harleys

Hi All,

John Timms of BCC presented a Healey door mirror idea for pre-BJ7 models that I thought was both creative, practical, and should be shared. Wanting side door mirror without having to drilling new holes, John inserted round chrome Harley Davidson motorcycle mirrors into the forward side curtain mounting hole of each door to provide an easily adjusted rear view that can also be quickly removed without evidence. According to John, these $25 mirrors appear period correct, fit perfectly into the side curtain mounting holes, and come with height adjusting shims and acorn nuts for retaining adjustment settings. For the non-farsighted Healey owner who has difficulty setting or seeing through their Lucas wing mirrors and doesn’t want to drill new holes, these seem to be a great solution.

All the best,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

This is good except when you have your sidecurtains on. Cape sells mirror extensions that replace the big pozi-drive screws on the "toe" of the windshield. They also sell an extension - the stem has to be pretty long on the right to get the mirror where you can see it.
Someone needs to build a convertible mirror that will work as above with the top down and has a fitting for the sidecurtains.

Have one of those Harley mirrors on my Bugeye -- replaces the front-most screw holding the windshield on. Handy things. Really, there are lots of motorcycle mirrors that can work (the thread is pretty common), but these definitely work.

Steve,

I agree that you will not be able to have the door mirrors when the side curtains are installed. However, since most of us only use our Healeys in nice weather when there is no need for side curtains, the percentage of time without door mirrors will be very small. Although the Harley mirrors can be used as your only mirrors, I expect that many who choose these mirrors will already have a set they are less than happy with and, although their present mirrors are period (i.e. Lucas wing mirrors mounted over the front knock-offs) they would use these as an alternative and eliminate them when arriving at a show.

All the best,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Hi Mike,

As I understand, the front mounting hole of the side curtain is on a curved section of the cowl and angles the mirror arm further from the vertical. By adjusting the mirror, the arm looks further off-set. However, I will contact John to verify.

Update:
John confirmed that the cowl curve accentuates the angle of the mirror arm as mentioned and also indicated the Harley Davidson link you provided are the same mirrors he has installed.

Thanks. I plan to get a set for both the 100 and the Bugeye. Bugeye fender mirrors are not very helpful and impossible to keep aimed. This is a much better solution.
